Weekend Baseball Roundup: Sanders pitches Elma to key league win over Tenino

A big seventh inning propelled Elma to a key 5-1 win in baseball over Tenino on Friday, April 29, in Tenino.

Tied 1-1 after each team scratched across a run in the third inning, the Eagles erupted for four runs in the top of the seventh.

Jack Alexander put Elma up 2-1 by drawing a bases-loaded walk and was followed by a two-run single off the bat of TJ Dunlap.

Alexander then scored on a wild pitch to give Elma a 5-1 lead.

Elma pitcher Andrew Sanders made the lead hold up by holding Tenino (11-6, 6-3) scoreless in the bottom of the frame, getting Cody Strawn to ground into a 6-4-3 double play to end the game.

Sanders sparkled on the mound, holding 22nd-ranked Tenino to an unearned run on four hits with three strikeouts in seven innings pitched.

“Andrew Sanders was absolutely dealing on the mound tonight,” Elma head coach Travis Vessey said. “Our guys kept focused and stayed in a 1-1 ball game and found a way to win.”

Gibson Cain led Elma on offense, going 3-for-4 with a run scored and an RBI.

Sanders went 2-for-3 for Elma (6-9, 5-6).

The win trimmed Tenino’s lead over Elma for second place in the 1A Evergreen Lead to two games.

Elma takes on Hoquiam at 6 p.m. Monday at Olympic Stadium.

Montesano 14, Eatonville 1

Montesano moved one step closer to clinching a league title with a 14-1 five-inning drubbing over Eatonville in baseball on Friday in Montesano.

After a scoreless first inning, No. 12 Montesano (14-3, 9-0 1A Evergreen) put the Cruisers (7-9, 3-6) away with eight runs in the second inning that included RBI hits by Kaleb Ames, Isaac Pierce and Bode Poler.

Montesano left-hander Tyler Johansen picked up the win, allowing one run on one hit with a pair of strikeouts in 2 1/3 innings pitched.

Poler led Monte’s offense, going 3-for-4 with three runs and four RBIs.

Ames (2-2, 2B, 2R, 2RBI) and Pierce (2-3, R) also had multi-hit games for a Bulldogs team that had 11 hits and befitted from seven Eatonville errors in the contest.

The win and a Tenino loss to Elma on Friday puts Montesano three games up over the Beavers for first place in the 1A Evergreen League.

Montesano faces Tenino in a doubleheader at 3 p.m. on Tuesday in Tenino before closing out the league schedule against the Beavers at 4 p.m. on Friday at Vessey Field in Montesano.

Aberdeen snapped a four-game losing streak with a 4-0 win in baseball over Centralia on Friday in Centralia.

Aberdeen starter Hunter Eisele shined on the bump, holding the Tigers (5-9, 3-6 2A Evergreen) to no runs on two hits while striking out 10 with one walk in earning a complete game win.

Aberdeen (4-11, 2-9) scored a run on an Luca Pisani single in the first and took a 3-0 lead with two runs in the second, scoring a run on a Kale Goings single, followed by an Eisele RBI sacrifice fly.

The Bobcats added an insurance run in the top of the seventh when Marcus Hale crossed home on a passed ball.

Mason Sorensen led Aberdeen at the plate, going 2-for-3 with a double and a run scored.

Grays Harbor swept by Tacoma

The Grays Harbor Chokers were swept by Tacoma in a doubleheader on Friday in Tacoma.

GHC (11-23, 4-11 NWAC West) lost by scores of 13-2 and 4-0.

Aidan McMurdo (2-3, 2RBIs), Nolan Baugher (2-3, R), and Alex Zang (1-3, R) collected base hits for GHC in the 13-2 loss in the opener.

In the nightcap, Grays Harbor was no-hit over seven innings by Tacoma starter Trent Buchanan, who struck out nine with three walks.

GHC hosts Tacoma in a doubleheader on Sunday. First pitch scheduled for 1 p.m.
