UPDATE: The time of the Aberdeen-Ridgefield boys soccer game has been updated to 6 p.m. on Tuesday in Aberdeen.
Aberdeen wrapped up a fantastic regular season with a 2-1 win over WF West on Thursday in Chehalis.
Playing on an uneven, slippery surface no wider than a football field, Aberdeen (12-2-1 overall, 10-2 2A Evergreen League) fell behind in the first half of what Bobcats head coach Larry Fleming dubbed “a very physical game.”
Without defensive-minded senior stopper Logan Sias, who was out due to illness, the Bobcats struggled to keep opponents marked up in the Bobcats defensive third of the pitch.
WF West (9-7, 7-5) took advantage when Damian Hernandez converted a cross from Gideon Priest in the 17th minute to go up 1-0.
Aberdeen opened the second half with better defense and passing leading to better scoring chances.
The Bobcats cashed in on one of those chances in the 63rd minute when an Edwin Quintana free kick over the Bearcats defense was volleyed in by senior forward Daniel Guzman to knot the game up at a goal apiece.
Just three minutes later the Bobcats attack struck again.
A long throw-in by Quintana was headed forward by Guzman toward Evan Cone, who jumped over a defender to head it past the WF West keeper for a 2-1 lead.
Led by defenders Alan Avalos and Hugo Garcia and midfielders Gil Lopez and Cone, the Bobcats held the lead over the final quarter of game time to pick up the victory.
“It took us a little bit to get our footing, but once we did we played a solid game and really took over the match in the second half,” Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming said. “Hopefully, this momentum will carry over into next week.”
Ninth-ranked Aberdeen hosts Ridgefield in a 1A District 4 quarterfinal playoff game at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at Stewart Field.
The Aberdeen JV team finished its season with a scoreless tie against WF West JV.
Bobcats assistant coach Romeo Sanchez commended the play of Trino Villar, Luis Campos and Javier Lagunas.

WRESTLING
Chokers wrestlers medal at US Open Championships
The Grays Harbor College men’s wrestling team had three medalists at the US Open National Championships April 28-May 1 at the Southpoint Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Returning All-American Noah Cortez placed eighth in the 57 kilogram Freestyle discipline and Sione Halo placed sixth in the 87kg Greco-Roman competition.
Both wrestlers battled through six rounds to earn their spot on the podium.
“This is quite an accomplishment for our program for it is the first time we have had anyone place at the US Open. This is the countries best wrestlers at any division at all levels including returning Olympians and World team members,” Chokers head coach Kevin Pine said. “As a coaching staff, we are happy with the level of commitment our wrestlers are putting in. We are continuously striving to improve on our recruiting and development of our wrestling here in Aberdeen.”
The top seven placewinners in each weight class who had not already qualified will advance to the World Team Trials Challenge Tournament in Coralville, Iowa later this month.
Also competing for the Grays Harbor Wrestling Club were Karter Kares, Desmond Bowers, Ryan Cummings, William Christman and Andrea Jones.
Pine entered the Masters National Championship as well and went 7-0 over the two day event winning both the 88kg Freestyle and Greco-Roman titles.
