BOYS BASKETBALL

Wildcats 68, T-Wolves 49

ROCHESTER — Zach Allton scored 29 points as hot-shooting Ocosta stayed alive in the District IV Class 2B Tournament on Friday with a surprisingly decisive conquest of Morton-White Pass.

The Wildcats (7-15) will face the loser of today’s Napavine/Kalama quarterfinal in a loser-out contest scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday at Black Hills High School in Tumwater.

Allton hit 13-of-18 from the field (oddly, he made only one of eight free throws) in fueling the Wildcat attack. He also contributed in other aspects of the game, with seven steals and five assists.

As a team, Ocosta shot 53 percent from the floor.

“We had more assists than turnovers for the first time all year, which was huge,” Ocosta coach Jason Quinby summarized. “Other than free-throw shooting, we played pretty darned well. Everybody contributed. It was far and away our best effort of the year.”

Richard Dueber added 15 points and senior Drake Mitby 11 points and four steals for the Wildcats.

Gulls 41, Loggers 37

TUMWATER — Raymond used brilliant foul shooting to withstand a late Onalaska rally and stay alive in the District IV Class 2B tournament on Friday at Tumwater.

The Seagulls (13-9) will face the loser of today’s Adna-Chief Leschi quarterfinal in another loser-out contest scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Monday at Tumwater.

Although struggling to establish their running game against Onalaska’s traditional ultra-patient offense, the Gulls owned a 10-point lead midway through the fourth quarter. The Loggers, however, hit a couple of 3-pointers to trim the deficit to one in the late going.

Raymond’s Kason Koski, who led all scorers with 21 points, was money from the foul line during crunch time. He made 10-of-12 free throws, including 5-of-6 in the final period.

Outscored from the field, the Gulls canned 18-of-23 foul shots.

“I thought that was the difference in the game, that stat only,” Raymond coach Derek Rask said. “We needed to hit free throws down the stretch and we did just that.”

Luke Hamilton added 10 points for the Gulls, while diminutive guard Brian Sida led Gull rebounders with seven.

The Vikings finished their season at 12-10.

With three players scoring in double figures, the Mounties led 35-17 at the half and were never threatened. The Vikings made only 3-of-14 foul shots.

“Rainier showed up ready to play,” Valley coach Jay Pearson said. “They outhustled us, outplayed us, out-physicaled us. I’m disappointed, because I know we’re a better team than that. They beat us in every facet of the game.”

Matt Pearson was the main bright spot for the Vikings with 20 points and eight rebounds. Freshman Peter Hamilton topped Willapa Valley rebounders with with 10.

Coach Pearson saluted Leo Ruelas, his team’s lone senior.
