GIRLS BASKETBALL

OYEHUT — Rallying from a four-point deficit in the final minute in regulation, North Beach outlasted Toutle Lake in overtime in the opening round of the District IV Class 2B tournament on Wednesday night at “The House of Pain.”

The Hyaks (13-8) will challenge second-ranked Wahkiakum in a quarterfinal Saturday at a time and location to be determined.

Down by as many as eight, the Hyaks still trailed 34-30 heading into the final minute. A Mariah Vogler basket cut the margin to two.

Regaining possession with about 10 seconds remaining, the Hyaks ran an inbounds play to perfection, with Hannah Avery shaking free for a tying layin (her only points of the game) with about five seconds left.

Adelina Desamours, scoreless during regulation, opened overtime with a 3-point basket. With Reilly Moore and Helen Garman combining for the remaining five points, North Beach led narrowly for the remainder of overtime.

“Our whole motto all year has been defense, defense,” North Beach coach Larry Moore said. “All the time (we were down), I felt if we played defense, we’d make some shots. These girls don’t give up, we’re like the little engine that could.”

Garman dominated the paint in leading the Hyaks with 18 points. The 5-foot-5 Avery yanked down 14 rebounds, while Vogler had 12 boards for the Hyaks.

Coach Moore cited his daughter Reilly for her ball-handling.

RAYMOND — Guards Aubree Gardner and Cydney Flemetis produced excellent all-around performances as Raymond opened District IV Class 2B competition by trouncing Toledo on Wednesday night at Raymond.

The Pacific League co-champion Gulls (19-2) will face Napavine in a quarterfinal Saturday at a time and location to be determined.

Gardner led all scorers with 20 points while also contributing six rebounds, three steals and three assists. Flemetis chipped in with 18 points, 13 rebounds and three steals.

“Those two really showed up to play tonight and it was nice to see their effort,” Raymond coach Jason Koski said. “We were quicker to the ball than we had been the last three or four games.”

Raymond outrebounded the Indians, 37-28, and swiped 14 steals as a team.

Mikayla Collins added 13 points for the Gulls, who led 36-17 at the half and slowly pulled away.

NAPAVINE — Melissa Lee scored 38 points as Napavine overcame an exceptional performance from Ocosta’s Kristi Raffelson for an opening-round victory in the District IV Class 2B Tournament on Wednesday at Napavine.

The Wildcats (9-11) face Toledo in a loser-out game scheduled for 8 p.m. today at Rochester.

Raffelson scored 32 points and pulled down 24 rebounds for Ocosta. Much of her scoring output, however, came in the second half.

Plagued by 20 first-half turnovers, the Wildcats trailed 43-15 at intermission.

“They ran a 1-3-1 halfcourt trap. We fell for the trap and turned it over, turned it over and turned it over some more,” Ocosta coach Jason Barnum reported. “I think our first seven possessions were turnovers. Once we settled down, made smart decisions and got the ball to Raffelson, it opened things up and it was a lot closer game.”

Among her other accomplishments, Raffelson canned 10-of-12 foul shots.

Today, South Bend will travel to Montesano to take on Onalaska at 8 p.m. in a loser-out contest.

The Pirates, led by Devanie Kleemeyer’s 31 points and Kenya Lorton’s 22 points, never trailed and led 42-13 at the half. Karley Reidinger led the Indians (9-12) with 14 points and Jessica Sanchez added 10 rebounds.

“Reidinger shot the ball well; in the looks we were able to get her, she was 6-for-14,” South Bend head coach Gary Wilson said. “We were just overpowered in every part of the game. We’re still a sophomore group and we came in scared. Adna is a great team.”

BOYS BASKETBALL

Ducks 48, Vikings 41

TOUTLE — Willapa Valley held a nine-point lead in the third quarter, but found foul trouble with two of its key players as Toutle Lake used a big third quarter to edge into the winner’s bracket of the District IV 2B tournament on Wednesday night.

On Friday, Willapa Valley (12-9) will take on Rainier at 8 p.m. at Rochester High School in a loser-out contest.

“Overall, I’m very pleased with how we played,” Valley head coach Jay Pearson said. “We played solid defense. We won the hustle, 50-50 battles and we rebounded well. In the second half, Ryon Ashley and Matt Pearson each had three fouls and had to sit for most of the half. In the third, our age showed and Toutle Lake’s pressure forced mistakes.

“Other than that, I’m very pleased with the way we played.”

Walker Oblad led all scorers with 20 points and Ashley added eight points, nine rebounds and six assists for the Vikings. Cam Swanson led the Ducks with 13 points.

Willapa Valley 11 11 10 9 — 41 Toutle Lake 9 11 20 8 — 48

Pirates 75, Wildcats 42

ADNA — Host Adna used a blistering transition game to trounce Ocosta in the opening round of the District IV Class 2B Tournament on Wednesday.

The Wildcats (6-15) will take on Morton/White Pass in a loser-out game scheduled for 6:30 p.m. Friday at Rochester.

Blake Davis hit four 3-pointers in leading Adna with 20 points. The Pirates, coached by Willapa Valley grad Luke Salme, cashed in heavily on 21 Ocosta turnovers.

“When we played them straight up, we probably outscored them,” Ocosta coach Jason Quinby said. “But whenever we made a turnover, they turned them into two or three points. They did that better than any team we’ve faced.”

Zach Allton topped the Wildcats with 14 points, five steals and five assists. Richard Dueber added 10 points for Ocosta.

Chinooks 70, Gulls 46

RAYMOND — A close first half turned into a Kalama run in the second half, handing host Raymond a first-round loss in the District IV 2B Tournament on Wednesday night.

On Friday, Raymond will travel to Tumwater to take on Onalaska at 6:30 p.m.

The Chinooks held a slim 31-27 halftime lead, but found their shooting touch against the Gulls in the third quarter — a 25-13 frame that clinched the quarterfinals berth.

“I thought in the first half we made several mistakes on the offensive end,” Raymond head coach Derek Rask said. “We talked about the adjustments to improve on that at halftime, but our approach to the second half wasn’t there. They were locked in and they ripped off a solid second half. Their shooters were on and we didn’t have the awareness on them that we needed to have.”

Kason Koski led the Gulls (12-9) with 20 points. Cameron Walker led all scorers with 23 points for the Chinooks.
