Led by a championship performance by the Montesano girls team, multiple Harbor student-athletes won district titles at the 1A District 4 Championship meet on Thursday at Seton Catholic High School in Vancouver.

The Montesano Bulldogs girls track and field team defended its district title, winning its second consecutive championship by scoring 134.83 points to outpace Columbia-White Salmon (106.5 points) and host Seton Catholic (99), which placed second and third, respectively.

Monte was led by junior Ashlyn Devereaux — who won the javelin championship by one inch with a throw of 106 feet, five inches — and another solid performance by its 4×200 relay team of Alayna Olson, Lilly Causey, Sierra Birdsall and Jaiden Morrison, which won with a time of 1:48.55, the top time in the 1A class this season.

Montesano’s boys team earned two district titles on Thursday with Jesse Anderson winning the 800 and Gabe Bodwell taking the javelin championship.

The Monte boys team placed fifth overall with 64 points, well off the pace of district champion Eatonville (138).

“Overall, we had 13 kids qualify to go to state, so it was an outstanding day from everyone that qualified to move on,” said Montesano head coach Doug Schupbach, who provided his strategy on preparing for the state meet.”We’re going to focus on form work. … The hay is in the barn as they say, so we’ll work on finalizing a few things and hope they perform well over there.”

Hoquiam’s boys and girls team won two district titles apiece at the meet.

Hoquiam senior Tyara Straka proved once again that she is one of the top throwers in the state after winning both the girls shot put and discus competitions.

The Grizzlies boys team was led by Gio Foster, who beat Eatonville’s Job Kralik in the 100 and placed second behind Kralik in the 200.

Foster also anchored Hoquiam’s victorious boys 4×100 relay team, joining teammates Kohlton Philamalee, Nakota Brown and Timmy Higgins in winning the district title over second-place Tenino (45.54) with a time of 45.27.

The Grizzlies girls team places sixth overall with 65 points while the boys team tied Columbia-White Salmon for seventh with 41.5 points.

Elma jumper Elijah Flores won the district boys triple jump title with a mark of 39-02 and will be going to state in the long jump after finishing second with a leap of 19-06.

McGough leads Willapa Valley at district championship meet

Willapa Valley will be sending multiple athletes to the state championship after a successful 1B District 1-4 Championship meet on Thursday in Franklin Pierce.

Twelve Willapa Valley athletes qualified for next week’s 1B State Championship meet at Eastern Washington University by qualifying in their respective events (top six for girls, top eight for boys events).

Led by multi-district champion Lauryn McGough, who won both the girls pole vault and javelin, the Vikings won five district titles on Thursday.

Chris Western won the boys pole vault with a personal-best mark of 13-09, Lanissa Amacher won the girls discus (33-10) and Emily Wilson won the girls 400 (1:02.25 PR).
