Raymond, North Beach fall in district 2B girls quarterfinals

Both Raymond and North Beach’s girls basketball teams had a rough Saturday evening during the District IV 2B championship quarterfinals at Montesano and Rochester high schools.

For the Gulls, the Pacific 2B League champions, they had their worst game of the year and struggled against Napavine in a 47-25 loss at Rochester. For the Hyaks, they took on second-ranked Wahkiakum, the Central 2B League champions, and couldn’t slow them down in a 77-48 loss.

Tigers 47, Gulls 25

For a team that is known for defense, Raymond saw Napavine’s defense just as potent with two 5-foot-10 posts — Mollie Olson and Melissa Lee — leading the way.

The Gulls were unable to find room to maneuver on offense, turned the ball over 21 times — 12 of them in the first half alone — to fall into a deficit they could not fly out of.

“What Lee and Olson do to you, with their long length, is they change your spacing on offense and you can’t work on that in practice,” Raymond head coach Jason Koski said. “It is more of a mindset that you have to find our spaces, creating that spaces. It is difficult, because you get frustrated that you can’t go where you are supposed to go and it follows you into other aspects of the game.”

Napavine scored the game’s first 11 points, but watched Raymond claw back to trail 11-7 after the first quarter. Then, the Tigers kept the pressure on. Forcing turnovers and contested shots, Napavine dominated the second quarter and gave itself a lead it would never relinquish.

Lee and Olson, who scored the Tigers’ first 11 points, combined for 13 more points in the second quarter with drives to the basket, mid-range jumpers and offensive-rebound putbacks. A 19-3 quarter put the Tigers up 30-10 at the half and send the Gulls scrambling into the halftime locker room.

“That was our worst defensive game — we didn’t play with any intensity,” Koski added. “We hang our hat on our defense, but we still have one more game.”

Defensively, Raymond came back in the second half, slowing Lee and Olson down. Cydney Flemetis and Aubree Gardner found some of their perimeter shooting range to get the Gulls moving again. The Gulls were just 4-for-21 from behind the 3-point line.

Gardner led Raymond in scoring with 13 points. Lee led all scorers with 30 points and Olson added 11 points.

Mules 77, Hyaks 48

Wahkiakum got North Beach into some early foul trouble, forced a few turnovers and pulled in a bushel of rebounds to take a 14-0 lead midway through the first quarter. From there, the Mules hit the trail and left the Hyaks behind.

The Mules took a 21-6 first-quarter lead and added to it with their pressure and perimeter shooting. Hitting 6-for-16 from behind the 3-point line, Wahkiakum pulled away for a 50-19 halftime lead.

“We’ve been working harder in practice in rebounding, but there were times they’d get 4-5 shots per possession,” North Beach head coach Larry Moore said. “They’re a really good team and it is tough to beat a team like that when you give them extra chances. Yeah, it was a slow start, but we had shots, just didn’t make them.”

Senior Peyton Souvenir score 26 of her game-high 32 points in the first half, draining seven 3-point baskets overall. Her seventh and final trey of the contest pushed the lead to 64-22 to set off the 40-point mercy rule running clock with 4:18 left in the third quarter.

North Beach found its shooting in the second half, especially when the game was on the running clock. Reilly Moore scored 12 of her team-high 16 points in the second half to lead the Hyaks.

“That’s their style — our style is in the 30s and 40s, while their style is in the 70s and 80s,” Moore added. “Souvenir controlled the tempo and that’s what she does for them. I’m proud of our girls. We didn’t let up in effort, just execution wasn’t good.”
