Nebraska farm girl, volunteer extraordinaire, and always God’s faithful servant, Jane Schloz reunited in Heaven with her beloved husband “Gene” in early May 2022. Born on the family farm in Silver Creek, Nebraska, Jane attended a one-room schoolhouse, graduated as valedictorian of Silver Creek High School in 1940, completed business school in Omaha, and attended the University of Omaha. Jane remained a farm girl at heart for 99 years and cherished the memories of her rural upbringing with her “hero” brother, Glen, and numerous cousins and family members. She enjoyed reminiscing about family gatherings, homemade ice-cream socials, driving a tractor, and milking the cow.

Jane was an ACTIVE volunteer throughout her life. A member of the United Methodist Church, her strong faith brought her joy as a Sunday school teacher, UMW member and officer, and church helper in many capacities – including playing the piano and assisting with Bingo at the nursing home. In addition to church activities, Jane earned a lifetime PTA membership at Aberdeen’s Stevens School, tutored at Simpson Elementary in Montesano, spent 12 years volunteering for the Grays Harbor Conservation District, facilitated numerous 4-H events, led Girl Scout troops, assisted with elections on voting day, and donated gallons of blood. She was especially proud of her 18 years of service as a hospice volunteer. Her many contributions to the community were recognized in 2005 when she was the recipient of The Margaret Downey Award. This endless list of service activities surely earned her a PhD in volunteering!

Jane not only had an eye for the needs of others, but a zest for life and adventure. She traveled by bus, train, and plane throughout the US, Europe, Tunisia and in 2017 cruised through the Panama Canal at the age of 95.

An accomplished seamstress, Jane had her own sense of style. She was “thrifting” before it was popular and especially enjoyed The Dollar Store and Value Village. Pearls and polished nails were her signature later in life.

Always thoughtful, Jane will be remembered for the volumes of letters and greeting cards she sent through the years to recognize and celebrate milestones and accomplishments. A devoted mother and major cheerleader for her family, Jane provided a home filled with love for her daughters, JoAnn, Janet, and Janell; her grandchildren Ian, Maria, Dean, Rachel, Dawson, Graham, and Caleb; great-grandchildren Mallory, Keily, Colton, Sierra, Michael, and Deryn; an AFS exchange student from Thailand (Angkhana); and many beloved Foster children. Many nieces, nephews, cousins and friends, especially those at the Colonial Inn and her special high school classmate, Dorothy, were also recipients of Jane’s kindness. She was preceded in death by her husband Gene, with whom she celebrated 44 years of marriage, and her devoted brother Glen, who gave her away on her wartime wedding day.

In her final months, Jane herself was on hospice. Her family wishes to express the deepest of gratitude to her entire hospice team and to the staff at Umbrella Always Care adult family home. Their kind and compassionate care made a world of difference and helped ease the completion of a beautiful life. A service is planned at Montesano United Methodist Church on July 9, at 2 p.m.
