The stage at the Raymond Theatre will come alive with the sound of music in September.
On Sunday, Sept. 11, Tallā Rouge violists Aria Cheregosha and Lauren Spaulding will present a free concert.
According to their website “This dynamic and genre-bending ensemble, fueled by their Persian and Cajun roots, ignites the stage with their fiery heritages — challenging the standards of what classical music can look like in today’s world.”
The group comes to Raymond by way of the Ladies Musical Club of Seattle, which sponsors the annual Frances Walton Competition. For more than 30 years, the competition has provided a unique opportunity for classical musicians ages 20 to 35 to audition for an award package including generous cash prizes, a live performance on Classical KING-FM 98.1, and an outreach and recital tour of locations throughout Washington State.
The free concert starts at 2 p.m.
On Sept. 25, a folk duo from Winnipeg, Canada — The Small Glories — will take to the stage.
The twosome is made up of banjo virtuoso Cara Luft and songwritrer-guitarist JD Edwards.
According to SAL’s press release, “Their blend of yearning harmonies and romping, stomping instrumentals may be remindful of such disparate artists as Pete Seeger or Mumford & Sons, but The Small Glories is very much its own creation. Inspired by the power of music to unite people, especially during fractious and divisive times, these performers declare that ‘part of our job is to somehow create unity’ even if it is to just get audiences to sing together.”
Show time will be 2 p.m. and tickets at the door are $25 (cash or check only). Tickets may be purchased in advance for $20 by mail by sending a SASE and check payable to Sunday Afternoon Live to SAL, P.O. Box 964, South Bend, WA 98586, via email at sal@reachone.com, by phone at 360-836-4419 and PayPal at www.sundayafternoonlive.org.
