Aberdeen pulled away with two second half goals and held off a late Elma rally to come away with a 2-1 win on Tuesday in Elma.

After a scoreless first half that saw Elma winning possessions but neither team applying much pressure on the opposition’s net, Aberdeen got the game’s first goal when forward Annie Troeh dropped a ball off to senior midfielder Marina Marll who then chipped it over the head of Elma keeper Emmie Spencer in the 45th minute.

Five minutes later, a cross from midfielder Abby Mainio found the foot of Troeh, who scored from close range to put the Cats up 2-0.

Elma’s Miley Seaberg scored on a cross from Aaleigha Weld in the 70th minute, but it wasn’t enough as Aberdeen won its season opener and handed the Eagles their first loss of the young season.

“Our defense was solid and we won the ball aggressively in the second half, but we were either weak or errant on too many shots to really put the game away,” said Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming, citing the play of defender Aili Scott, Marll and senior midfielder Aman Cheema. “First-game jitters aside, we need to play a lot better if we are going to continue to win.”

“I was happy to play (Aberdeen) because they are bigger than us and are going to give us a challenge,” Elma head coach Evan Valentine said. “(Aberdeen) played a good, tough physical game. They out-physicaled us, so it was a good learning experience for my young team.”

Elma (2-1 overall) plays at Columbia-White Salmon at 6 p.m. Thursday at Columbia High School.

Aberdeen (1-0) plays against WF West at 7 p.m. Thursday in Chehalis.
