A fire on Monday afternoon, Sept. 19, destroyed a Westport residence, finally being extinguished around 6 p.m.

No casualties were reported, said Westport Police Chief Nate Saunders while on-scene at the fire, which occurred on East Spokane Avenue.

“It was fully engulfed when we arrived on-scene,” Saunders said. “The fire department is investigating the cause.”

Capt. Keith Zelepuza, the South Beach Regional Fire Authority’s incident commander for the fire, said on Tuesday, Sept. 20, their investigation was getting underway.

“It was a residential structure fire. As far as the fuel load, that was a big thing,” Zelepuza said. “By the time we got there, the flames had gone through the roof.”

The residence, a double-wide mobile home manufactured in 1989, was consumed by the flames, with multiple South Beach RFA assets responding, including 13 personnel, Zelepuza said. Zelepuza confirmed that there were no injuries among the residents.

“Everybody got out of the residence safely,” Zelepuza said. “All residents were actually out on the front lawn by the time the first unit arrived.”

Saunders said the residents were workers at a local cannery.

The carport attached to the house was also a total loss, Zelepuza said, and a car parked under the carport suffered some heat and flame damage. Zelepuza praised the efforts of the Westport Police Department, Westport’s streets and water departments and the Grays Harbor Public Utility District for helping to control the scene and cut utilities to the residence.

“(Grays Harbor PUD) were Johnny-on-the-spot for taking care of the electrical,” Zelepuza said.

The fire was contained to the residence, Zelepuza said, and was prevented from spreading to surrounding trees or residences.
