Two of the best volleyball teams in the Twin Harbors met for a non-league matchup on Monday, with the Hoquiam Grizzlies besting the Raymond Seagulls in straight sets at Hoquiam High School.
The Grizzlies (13-0 overall) won a hard fought contest by scores of 27-25, 28-26 and 25-18.
Raymond (13-3) led 23-21 in the first set, but the Grizzlies battled back to take the set into extra points for the 27-25 win.
The second set also needed extra points to be decided as the top team in the 1A Evergreen League battled the 2B Pacific League champs.
Hoquiam was led by Ashlinn Cady (18 digs, 11-11 service), Ella Folkers (30 assists, 13-13 service, 17 digs), Chloe Kennedy (14 kills, 15-15 service), Faith Prosch (10 kills, 9 digs) and Kristina Goulet (8 kills).
“I have to give a lot of credit to our back row again in serve receive. They passed amazing and gave us opportunities to run our offense,” Hoquiam head coach Heather Bozich said. “The way we fought for points and never gave up when we got down was inspiring.”
Raymond was led by Kassie Koski (6 aces, 100% service), Karsyn Freeman (15 kills, 23 digs), Kyndal Koski (19 digs), Megan Kongbouahkay (33 assists) and Alia Enlow (3 blocks).
“Raymond has some outstanding hitters and blockers. They were so scrappy it was hard to put the ball on the floor, but we found a way even if it wasn’t always pretty,” Bozich said. “We knew it was going to be a tight match and that we would have to play well to win so I can’t say enough about what we did on the court tonight.”
“We struggled with our passing and spent too much time out of system,” Raymond head coach Julie Jewell said. “We didn’t take advantage of times when Hoquiam made unforced errors like we should have. It was hard for us to get in a rhythm.”
Hoquiam hosts Tenino in the final regular-season home match for the Grizzlies at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
Raymond takes on South Bend in its regular-season finale at 7 p.m. Wednesday at South Bend High School.

PREP GIRLS SOCCER
Ocosta 3, Raymond-South Bend 1
A quick goal to start the second half proved to be the game-winner as Ocosta defeated Raymond-South Bend 3-1 on Monday in Westport.
Ocosta (7-7-1, 5-4 2B Central-North) clinched the No. 3 seed in next week’s 2B District 4 Tournament with the victory.
Liv Bartley put Ocosta on the scoreboard after putting in a rebound off a Miki Ness shot for a 1-0 lead.
Raymond-South Bend (5-8-1, 4-5) scored on its only shot of the game off a corner kick in the 32nd minute.
Tied 1-1 at halftime, Ocosta needed just eight seconds to score at the start of the second half.
Natalie Carloza connected on a give-and-go with Ness, who drove home what would turn out to be the game winner for a 2-1 lead in the 41st minute.
Ness scored an insurance goal off a direct kick from 25 yards out in the 77th minute.
Ocosta outshot the Ravens 29-1.
“The girls came out ready to play tonight and dominated most of the possession and shots. They really wanted to get the third seed (in the 2B Central League) and our defense did what they needed to do as the first tie breaker is head-to-head away goals, and we had scored two at their place,” Ocosta head coach Mike King said. “We made some changes from our first game and it worked out perfectly.”
King cited the defensive play of Meghan Denny, Gabby Ness, Kennedy Reynolds, Joanah Rosander and Taeler Jardine for limiting the Ravens to a single shot while Carloza, Scarlett Nelson and Penny Park controlled the midfield for most of the game.
Ocosta hosts Napavine in the regular-season finale at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.
RSB plays at Ilwaco at 6 p.m. Wednesday.
Raymond-South Bend 1 0 — 1
