WSDOT plans Grass Creek Bridge emergency repair

State Route 109 at the Grass Creek Bridge is set for a $1.4 million emergency repair projected to start in winter of 2022.

This project involves repairs to the Grass Creek Bridge on state Route 109 west of Hoquiam. Work at this site includes installing a total of six steel piles to the outer side of the bridge and inserting a steel cross beam to support the bridge and restore its weight capacity.

A timeline has the project completed in spring 2023. The southbound lane on state Route 109 at the Grass Creek Bridge is currently closed. Once construction starts, the bridge will be closed to all traffic. Travelers will be detoured to Ocean Beach Road via US Route 101 at Hoquiam for northbound and via Powell Road for southbound.

The Grass Creek Bridge is a 324-foot long, 12-span bridge founded on wood piles. On May 24, 2022, the bridge had to be reduced to one lane after the annual bridge inspection revealed excessive rot in a couple of the piles, which reduced the load carrying capacity.
