Fire breaks out in Elma mobile home

A separate fire broke out Monday night in Ocean Shores the previous night.

A fire broke out early Tuesday morning, tearing through an Elma mobile home.

Firefighters from East Grays Harbor Fire and Rescue and Montesano Fire Department responded to the incident; no injuries were reported.

“It was confirmed that it was started in the kitchen,” said EGHFR firefighter and public information officer Ali Sinclair in an interview. “The home was a total loss. The family is displaced.”

The call came in about 8:30 a.m. on Tuesday morning, Sinclair said. EGHFR responded initially, with support from Montesano Fire Department. About 15 personnel responded to the call.

“It was a pretty basic one for us,” Sinclair said. “I think it was an appliance fire. It started near the oven.”

Firefighters successfully contained the fire from spreading to surrounding residences, Sinclair said. All EGHFR personnel had cleared the scene by approximately 12:30, Sinclair said. The American Red Cross is working with the family on what comes next.

Ocean Shores fire

Across the county, the Ocean Shores Fire Department responded to a call Monday evening .

“We got dispatched at 7:49 p.m. We got dispatched to an alarm with no smoke or flame. We go to those a lot,” said OSFD Assistant Chief Brian Ritter in a phone interview. “They were only able to respond with four because that’s all they had on duty.”

Firefighters rapidly identified an upstairs bathroom as the origin of the fire, Ritter said.

“With further investigation, there was a working fire upstairs,” Ritter said. “As they looked upstairs, there was thick black smoke.”

Firefighters rapidly isolated and neutralized the fire, preventing the loss of the structure.

“They were able to make a good quick knockdown,” Ritter said. “There was a tremendous amount of smoke damage. Anytime you get that much smoke it’s toxic. It’s a carcinogen.”

The residents are temporarily displaced but will be able to resume living there once the structure is cleaned, Ritter said.

“Luckily, everyone’s safe and no one’s hurt,” Ritter said. “We didn’t have to make a rescue.”

The cause of the fire is under investigation, Ritter said.
