While Aberdeen’s game against league-foe Rochester wouldn’t be considered a “must-win,” it was an important one nonetheless.

The Bobcats were in control from the tip-off and got a near triple-double from standout Maddie Gore to pick up a key 45-31 victory over the Warriors on Monday in Rochester.

Aberdeen (10-3 overall, 5-2 2A Evergreen) led 13-8 at the end of the first quarter, with Gore scoring all 13 points, and took a comfortable 24-14 lead by halftime.

Gore added six points in each of the third and fourth quarters to lead Aberdeen to the win.

“It really was the Maddie Gore show,” Aberdeen head coach Rachel Wenzel said of her star senior guard, who finished with 29 points, 10 steals and eight rebounds. “She orchestrated our offense and was the epitome of a court leader.”

Aberdeen junior Jaylynn Phimmasone scored eight points while junior Zoe Troeh added six points for the Bobcats.

Aberdeen’s defense held Rochester (3-8, 2-5) to less than 10 points in three of four quarters.

“The girls did a good job containing their post players,” Wenzel said.

Roisin Stull led the Warriors with 11 points and 12 rebounds while Mandy Andree-Cordell had 10 points, seven boards and six steals.

With the win, Aberdeen sits in third place in the league standings, three games ahead of the Warriors, Black Hills and Shelton, which are all tied with 2-5 league records.

Aberdeen plays at last-place Centralia at 7 p.m. on Wednesday.

BOYS PREP BASKETBALL

Willapa Valley 49, Tenino 44

Willapa Valley got off to a hot start and played sound defense in beating Tenino 49-44 on Monday in Menlo.

The Vikings (10-4) jumped out to a 24-9 lead at the end of the first quarter and led 31-14 after holding the Beavers (8-6) to five points in the second quarter.

Valley was led by senior guard Riley Pearson, who scored 20 points on 8-of-19 shooting (42%) and made four 3-pointers in the game.

Senior forward Wil Clements and senior guard Kolten Fluke scored 12 and nine points, respectively, for the Vikings, which shot 19 of 55 as a team (35%).

Tenino standout Noah Schow scored a game high 24 points, but no other Beavers player had more than six on the evening.

“We did a nice job defensively inside,” said Vikings head coach Jay Pearson, who added he has seen an improvement in his team after recent hard-fought wins against Columbia Adventist Academy and Mossyrock.

“We kind of turned a corner after back-to-back tough games,” he said. “We challenged (Vikings players) to keep it going tonight.”

The Vikings have a quick turnaround when they face combo-school compatriot Pe Ell at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in Menlo.
