Hoquiam put itself in a position to lock up second place in the 1A Evergreen League with a 53-40 victory over Eatonville on Wednesday in Eatonville.

The Grizzlies (12-6 overall, 5-2 1A Evergreen) trailed 10-7 after one quarter but rallied behind eight points in the second quarter from senior guard Graci Bonney-Spradlin to take a 24-23 lead just before the end of the first half.

In the third quarter, Hoquiam got points from five different players to take a 42-36 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

The Grizzlies defense held Eatonville (12-6, 4-3) to just one field goal and four points in the fourth quarter to pick up the key league victory.

Bonney-Spradlin led the Grizzlies with 17 points – including 8 of 17 free throws (47%) – to go along with seven assists and seven steals in a standout performance.

Senior center Chloe Kennedy had a double-double with 11 points and 13 rebounds while senior guard Ella Folkers also scored 11 points for the Grizzlies, which went 16 of 55 from the field (29%) and 19 of 43 from the free-throw line (44%).

Defensively, Hoquaim was led by forward Ashlinn Cady, who had a team-high 13 rebounds and played “monster defense” according to Hoquiam head coach Chad Allan.

The Grizzlies held Eatonville to 31% from the field on 18-of-59 shooting, including 1 of 21 from the 3-point line, forced 33 turnovers and had 18 steals as a team.

“Good road win in a physical contest. Proud of our team to find ways to come back after a first half deficit and take the lead just before half,” Allan said. “This was a true team effort.”

With the win, Hoquiam sits one game ahead of Eatonville in the race for second place with one game left on the schedule.

Hoquiam hosts Montesano at 7 p.m. on Friday in the regular-season finale.

Montesano 52, Rochester 11

Montesano continued to exhibit why they are a favorite again for a final-four state appearance after cruising past Rochester 52-11 on Wednesday in Montesano.

The Bulldogs (17-3, 7-0 1A Evergreen) held their Senior Night festivities and took care of the Warriors (5-11, 4-7) early, jumping out to a 15-2 lead after the first quarter.

Monte outscored Rochester 14-4 in the second quarter and 12-5 in the third before holding the Warriors scoreless in the fourth quarter. It was the eighth time this season Montesano has held an opponent under 20 points.

Monte was led by senior superstar and likely 1A Evergreen League MVP McKynnlie Dalan, who scored a game-high 15 points.

Freshman Evanjillie Dalan added 10 points and eight rebounds for a Montesano team that went 20 for 66 from the field (30.3%) and 9 of 18 from the charity stripe (50%).

The Bulldogs also got significant contributions from its backcourt as senior guard Maia Young (8 points, 5 steals), Vanna Prom (2 points, 8 rebounds, 5 steals) and Jaiden King (7 points) each played key roles in the Monte victory.

“We got off to a good start and jumped on them early,” Monte head coach Mark Mansfield said. “It was a good way for our seniors to end their regular-season home careers.”

As part of its Senior Night, Montesano senior center Addie Winter, who has been unable to play after suffering a knee injury late in the volleyball season, dressed and started for the Bulldogs and was honored by the crowd after leaving the game shortly after tip-off.

Monte closes out the regular season against Hoquiam at 7 p.m. Friday at Hoquiam High School.

Aberdeen 41, Shelton 29

Aberdeen got its offense going in the second half en route to a 41-29 victory over Shelton on Wednesday at Aberdeen High School.

The Bobcats (14-4, 8-3 2A Evergreen) led 15-7 after one quarter of play, but the offense went cold in the second quarter to score just two points in the period.

But the Bobcats defense was up to the task, limiting the Highclimbers (8-11, 3-8) to seven points in the second quarter to take a 17-14 lead at halftime.

In the second half, Aberdeen’s offense woke up to take control of the game.

Led by 11 points from junior guard Zoe Troeh, the Bobcats won the third frame 13-7 and wrapped up the Senior Night win with an 11-8 fourth quarter.

“We struggled to get our offense going until the second half when Zoe Troeh made some key shots, attacking and hit mid-range jumpers and a big three,” said Aberdeen head coach Rachel Wenzel, who cited Annie Troeh for playing “phenomenal defense on their guards.”

Aberdeen honored seniors Marina Marll (3 points, rebound, steal, assist), Litzy Orona (rebound), and league MVP candidate Maddie Gore (9 points, 9 rebounds, 4 steals, 7 assists, 2 blocks) on Senior Night.

“It was a very physical game and our goal was to limit our fouling and play with composure,” Wenzel said.

Aberdeen will be the 2A Evergreen League’s No. 3 seed entering the district tournament and will close out its regular season against WF West at 7 p.m. on Friday in Chehalis.

Raymond 77, South Bend 20

Raymond stormed out the gate en route to a 77-20 win over South Bend in a regular-season finale on Wednesday in South Bend.

The Seagulls (15-4, 10-2 2B Pacific) had the game well in hand by halftime, outscoring South Bend (4-15, 3-9) 25-8 and 27-5 over the first two quarters, led by Karsyn Freeman’s 25 points in the half.

Raymond held South Bend to eight points or less in each quarter en route to the victory, its 11th in a row.

The Seagulls were led by Freeman with 28 points, seven rebounds, six assists and six steals for the league MVP front-runner.

Koski scored 20 points to go along with four rebounds, two assists and two blocks for Raymond.

Kyndal Koski (8 points, 7 steals), Paige Williams (8 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals), Megan Kongbouakhay (7 points, 3 rebounds, assist) and Tymber Livingston (4 points, 7 rebounds) also made key contributions for the Seagulls.

“Very happy for our kids in how they played the first half. They played fast, free and very efficient on the offensive side of the ball, gathering 16 first half offensive rebounds and only turning the ball over three times,” Raymond head coach Jason Koski said. “Defensively, I thought we played with good purpose and team intensity. Karsyn had a good night scoring, primarily in the first half, but more importantly she played better defense as the game progressed. Great to see Kassie continue to hit some shots and Tymber Livingston and Paige Williams rebounded well for us.”

Raymond sits in a three-way tie for first place with Forks and Ilwaco in the 2B Pacific League and await its seeding for district-tournament play, which is scheduled to begin on Saturday.
