Gusty afternoon briefly knocks out power to coastal communities

A brisk winter wind clawed at powerlines and trees

A sun-dappled sky belied a cruelly cold, implacable onshore breeze on Monday afternoon, driving iron-heavy waves into shores and briefly knocking out power to scattered areas across Grays Harbor County.

Crews had restored power to the three outages across the county by mid-evening, including a widespread outage on the coast in the North Beach area, according to a Grays Harbor Public Utility District spokesperson.

About 2,600 customers were affected across Grays Harbor by winds gusting to 40-50 miles per hour, said Ian Cope, community and government relations director for Grays Harbor PUD.

“I think it was supposed to be 40-50 mph gusts on the coasts. It’s breezy but nothing out of the ordinary here for winter on the coast,” Cope said in a phone interview. “It looks like things are stable for the next few days.”

Outages occurred on the South Shore Road next to Lake Quinault, along the road between Brady and Montesano, and significantly, along the north beaches up to Tabla, where the majority of affected customers, about 2,500, were located, Cope said.

The first outage of the afternoon occurred just before 3 p.m., Cope said, with the last outage resolved by around 9 p.m.

The PUD isn’t unduly concerned about possibility of cold weather in the near future, Cope said, as most vegetation that would be affected by sub-freezing temperatures was already culled by freezes earlier in the season.
