Here’s a quick roundup of this weekend’s local basketball action from the opening rounds of the WIAA State Tournaments.

Boys

1A: No. 10 Seattle Academy 71, No. 15 Elma 56

Elma’s impressive run through the postseason ended with a 71-56 loss to Seattle Academy in a 1A State first-round matchup on Saturday in Bellevue.

The Eagles fell into an early hole after Elma started “extremely slow and played tentative,” according to head coach Matt Ferrier.

Elma rallied in the second half to get to within seven points, but ran out of time as Seattle Academy made its free throws down the stretch to hand the Eagles the season-ending loss.

Traden Carter and Cason Seaberg scored 22 and 14 points, respectively, for the Eagles.

1B: No. 4 Willapa Valley 48, No. 5 Moses Lake-Covenant Christian 34

Willapa Valley ramped up its defensive pressure to dominate the second half in a 48-34 victory over Moses Lake Christian-Covenant Christian on Saturday in Tumwater.

Leading by just two points at halftime, the Vikings turned up the defensive to hold the Lions to just three points in the third quarter, taking a 32-22 lead to the fourth period.

The Vikings were led by senior Derek Fluke, who scored 13 points to go along with a team-best 17 rebounds.

Willapa Valley advances to the state quarterfinals with the victory and will play the winner of No. 11 Mossyrock-No. 6 Lummi Nation at 3:45 p.m. on Thursday in Spokane.

Girls

1A: No. 5 King’s (Seattle) 51, No. 4 Montesano 37

Montesano couldn’t find enough offense in a 51-37 opening-round loss to King’s on Saturday in Tumwater.

The Bulldogs shot 22% from the field on 15-of-67 shooting, including 3 of 20 (15%) from 3-point range.

With the loss, Monte missed an opportunity to skip ahead to the state quarterfinals and will face No. 12 Seattle Academy in the second round at 12:15 p.m. on Wednesday in Yakima.

1A: No. 9 Freeman 47, No. 16 Hoquiam 19

Hoquiam’s season ended after a 1A State first-round loss to Freeman on Friday at West Valley High School in Spokane.

While the Grizzlies defense held Freeman under its season average, the offense spuddered against a long, athletic Scotties squad.

Hoquiam was held scoreless in the first quarter and managed just nine points in the second half.

Grizzlies senior point guard Graci Bonney-Spradlin scored 10 points to lead Hoquiam.

2B: No. 12 Raymond 50, No. 13 Davenport 42

Raymond overcame a nine-point first quarter deficit en route to a 50-42 win over Davenport in a 2B State first-round elmination game on Saturday at W.F. West High School in Chehalis.

Pacific League MVP Karsyn Freeman led the Gulls with 18 points despite getting into early foul trouble.

Freshman point guard Megan Kongboukhay scored 10 points and the Gulls outrebounded Davenport 29-25 to win their 20th game of the season.

Raymond will face No. 5 Adna in the Round of 12 at 7:15 p.m. on Wednesday in Spokane.

1B: No. 12 Willapa Valley 51, No. 13. Orcas Island 30

Tied at 12 after one period, the Vikings offense heated up in the second and third quarters, outscoring Orcas Island 30-9 to win the opening-round elimination game.

Seniors Grace Huber and Brooklyn Patrick led a balanced Willapa Valley attack with 11 points apiece.

Valley will face No. 5 Inchelium in the Round of 12 at 12:15 p.m. on Wednesday in Spokane.
