Grays Harbor College men’s golf team captain and former Hoquiam Grizzly Michael Jump was accepted to the PGA Management University Program at the University of Nevada-Las Vegas, Grays Harbor College announced on Thursday.

Jump currently possesses a 72.7 scoring average and plans to attend UNLV in the fall to obtain a degree in hospitality as well as earn his PGA Certification to become a golf professional.

UNLV is one of 20 schools to participate in the PGA Golf Management University Program offers “provides classroom courses, intership experience and opportunities for player development in a program for aspiring PGA Professionals,” according to the PGA of America website.

“We are very proud of how Michael has represented GHC Golf with with his work ethic, sportsmanship and dedication,” GHC head coach Ann Swanson said. “Michael is looking forward to an outstanding spring season along with the rest of team.”

Three local preps place first at powerlifting event

The Montesano Powerlifters had three competitors place first at the Northwest Christian Wolverine Powerlifting Meet on Saturday, Feb. 25 in Lacey.

Montesano’s Nathan Moua lifeted 685 total pounds to take the 123-pound weight-class title in the men’s division to lead Monte to a third-place finish in the 16-team field.

In the women’s competition, Montesano’s Rossie Newbill took first in the 105-pound class with 300 total pounds lifted with teammate Emily Stutesman taking first in the 165-pound class with 635 pounds lifted.

The Montesano women’s team placed second with 39 points behind first-place Olympia (47 points.)

Grays Harbor 4, Chemeketa 2

Jack Johnson pitched a complete game to lead Grays Harbor College to a 4-2 victory over Chemeketa in the first game of a double-header on Thursday in Salem, Oregon.

Johnson put in a workman-like effort, holding the Storm scoreless over the first six innings in the 145-pitch complete-game victory where he allowed two runs on seven hits.

The Chokers (3-7 overall) got on the board when Jaden Herwick came around to score on an Ian Winterhalder double in the top of the third.

Chemeketa (2-3) tied the game with a run in the bottom of the seventh before Winterhalder struck again, chasing home former Montesano Bulldogs Aaron Lano with a single in the eighth.

GHC’s Chase Thomson followed with an RBI single to score Herwick and Winterhalder came around to score on a fielder’s choice ground out by Chokers first baseman Dylan Ahmad, giving GHC a 4-1 lead.

Johnson allowed a two-out RBI single to Kane Kiaunis to make it a 4-2 game before getting Andrew Eide to ground out to Brandon Roundy at short to end the game.

Winterhalder led GHC’s offense, going 2-4 with a double and two RBI.

Chemeketa 8, Grays Harbor 7

Grays Harbor College let a 6-0 lead slip away in dropping the nightcap of a double-header to Chemeketa 8-7 on Thursday in Salem, Oregon.

GHC took a 6-0 lead with a run in the top of the second on a Brandon Roundy single; three in the third on run-producing at-bats by Hunter Hillyard, Beau Barowsky and Aidan McMurdo; and a run in the seventh off a Hillyard solo home run.

But Chokers starter Brandon Roundy got into trouble in the bottom of the seventh and – combined with an error and an errant pick-off attempt – the Storm scored a pair of runs in the frame to seize momentum.

The Chokers bullpen proceeded to allow two runs on two hits in the bottom of the eighth and – after Ian Winterhalder scored on a McMurdo ground out to give GHC a 7-4 lead in the top of the ninth – allowed four runs with two outs in the bottom of the ninth, losing the game on Andrew Eide’s walk-off single to right to score two runs.

Chokers reliever Adrian Stacy took the loss, surrendering four earned runs on three hits and three hit batters in the bottom of the ninth.

Thomson led the GHC offense, going 4-4 at the plate with a double, solo home run and two runs scored.

GHC is scheduled to face Chemeketa in a twin bill scheduled to start at 11 a.m. on Monday in Salem.
