After waiting a full week, the Montesano softball team got the season off to a good start by sweeping two games on Saturday.

Montesano 20, Napavine 1

Montesano got off to a good start to the season with a 20-1 win over Napavine on Saturday in Montesano.

The Bulldogs (2-0 overall) scored four in the bottom of the first and scored 10 runs in the second, capped by Alisyn Parkin’s two-run double for a 14-0 lead.

Monte put the game away with four runs in the fourth, with Parkin belting her second two-run double of the game followed later by an RBI double off the bat of Jordan Karr for a 20-1 lead.

Monte ace Riley Timmons picked up the win, holding Napavine hitless with eight strikeouts in her three innings of work.

The Bulldogs had 14 hits – four for extra bases – and were led by Karr (3-4, 2 R, RBI), Kylee Wisdom (2-4, 2B, R, 3 RBI), Parkin (2-2, 2B, 4 RBI), Kennedy Campbell (2-2, 2B, R, 3 RBI), Alyssa Maldonado (2-3, 3 R, RBI) and Addi Kersker (2-2, 2 R, RBI), each with multi-hit games.

The game was originally scheduled for the previous Monday, but was moved to Saturday due to a rain-out.

Montesano 11, Hockinson 0

Montesano’s bats stayed hot in an 11-0 win over Hockinson on Saturday in Montesano.

The Bulldogs jumped on Hockinson early, scoring a pair of runs in the bottom of the first, capped by a Liv Robinson sacrifice fly.

Monte added three more runs in the second – highlighted by back-to-back RBI triples by Kerser and Parkin – and took a 5-0 lead on a Karr run-scoring single.

After scratching across a run in the third, Monte put the game into mercy-rule territory with five runs in the fourth. In the frame, the Bulldogs got run-scoring hits from Parkin, Karr, Robinson, Regan Wintrip and Addi Potts.

Monte starter Grace Gooding earned the win, striking out three without allowing a hit in two innings pitched.

Monte head coach Pat Pace said his team was champing at the bit after waiting a week to get the season started.

“Our girls, as you could tell by the way they swung the bats today, they were ready to play,” he said.

Monte’s depth also showed on Saturday, particularly in the circle. The Bulldogs got solid outings from Maldonado, who allowed one unearned run on three hits with three strikeouts in relief of Timmons in Game 1, and Kaitlyn Trail, who allowed two hits with a strikeout in two shutout innings of relief in Game 2.

“We have five good pitchers on this team right now and it’s really good to see that,” Pace said. “It’s been awhile since we’ve had that number of pitchers coming in and we used all five today. So we’re excited about this season. .. I think having that depth takes some of the stress off our No. 1 and No. 2 pitchers.”
