Aberdeen remained unbeaten on the season with a vital 2-1 league victory over W.F. West on Friday in Chehalis, winning in a penalty-kick shootout.

The Bobcats (10-0 overall, 7-0 2A Evergreen) started hot to take an early 1-0 lead after senior forward/midfielder Gio Ambrogiani scored off a throw-in from senior midfielder Carlos Mendoza in the ninth minute of the match.

W.F. West (6-4, 5-3) tied the game when Aberdeen allowed its second penalty kick in three games. Adrian James converted the opportunity to tie the game at 1-all in the 33rd minute.

The game remained tied throughout the remainder of regulation and two overtime periods as each team had its chances for the go-ahead goal.

Aberdeen settled in on the grass field in the second half, but several runs to the goal were thwarted away.

The Bobcats defense was challenged as the Bearcats utilized their speed to send many long balls over the top of Aberdeen’s defense, leading to multiple shots on goal, the closest being a long shot over Aberdeen goal keeper Antonio Granados that rang off the crossbar.

After two scoreless overtime periods where both teams had chances to score, the game went to a penalty-kick shootout.

Aberdeen’s Edwin Quintana, Evan Cone and Juan Serrano scored as the Bobcats converted 3-of-4 penalty kicks while W.F. West missed its first and third chances, with one shot missing the goal and another saved by Granados.

Tied 3-3 in the shootout, Granados stepped up to take the Cats’ fifth shot and buried it into the back of the net for the win, 4-3 on penalty kicks.

“We new it would be a challenge playing on the grass down in Lewis County, and this was not our best game in regard to controlling the ball,” Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming said. “But our effort was always excellent and it kept us close enough to have a chance to win at the end.”

Ambrogiani, Colby Mendoza, Gil Lopez and Javier Garcia were cited by Fleming for having “terrific games.”

Aberdeen’s junior varsity team tied 0-0 to remain unbeaten on the season, with Mat Martins and Angel Espinoza commended for playing well by the Aberdeen coaching staff.

With the win, Aberdeen holds a 1.5 game lead over Tumwater and 2.5 games ahead of the third-place W.F. West.

The Bobcats play at Black Hills High School at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Montesano places third at Gamble Sands Invite

Led by a top-five score from Hailey Blancas, the Montesano girls golf team placed third at the Gamble Sands Girls Golf Invite on Wednesday in Bremerton.

Blancas, a junior that placed second at the state tournament last season, tied with Liberty’s Audrey Park with a score of 76 and placed fourth overall in the 1A/2A competition after losing a scorecard playoff.

Liberty’s Kylie McGrath placed first with a score of 74 with Ephrata’s Jayme Dwight taking second with a 75.

Montesano had the lowest team score for a 1A school, placing third in the 1A/2A standings with a score of 401.

Maggi Kupka shot a 101, Jessie Lalonde a 108 and Audree Dohrmann scored a 116 to round out Montesano’s team score.

Monte’s Emma Sainsbury finished outside the team scoring with a score of 151.

Ephrata won with a score of 386 with Selah placing second at 399.

W.F. West 6, Aberdeen 3

Aberdeen let an opportunity to seize control of the 2A Evergreen League race slip away after suffering a 6-3 loss to W.F. West on Friday in Aberdeen.

The Bobcats (6-4, 4-1 2A Evergreen) lost its first league game of the season after falling behind 3-0 after three-and-a-half innings, but the Bobcats responded when Laynie Yakovich drove in Aili Scott and Shyanna Patrick with a two-out double in the bottom of the third.

But W.F. West kept tagging on runs, getting to Aberdeen starter Lilly Camp for a run in each of the fourth and fifth innings to make it a 5-2 game.

Aberdeen scored an unearned run when Yakovich crossed the plate on an error in the bottom of the sixth, but the Bearcats tacked on a run off a Lena Fragner single in the top of the seventh to earn the 6-3 win.

Camp took the loss, allowing six earned runs on 11 hits with eight walks and five strikeouts in an uncharacteristic performance.

“As their head coach, I have to be better on keeping them engaged and motivated during the games,” Aberdeen head coach Jimmy McDaniel said of the loss. “I stressed to the players and assured them that this game does not define who we are, and what our capabilities are. The missed opportunities we had throughout the game definitely did not help in the outcome.”

While Aberdeen didn’t commit an error in the game, McDaniel eluded that his team was off its defensive standard.

“Defensively, we just fell short,” he said. “Lilly had some troubles on the mound today, and was not as dominant as we may be used to seeing, and we had a few fundamental mistakes.”

The loss shrinks Aberdeen’s lead to just a half-game over the Bearcats and Centralia in the tightly-packed 2A Evergreen League race.

“This EVCO 2A League is currently up for grabs, but it’s ours to give away,” McDaniel said.

Pe Ell-Willapa Valley resumed its season after a long layoff with an 11-0 win over Toledo on Friday in Toledo.

The Titans (6-2, 4-1 2B Pacific) picked up where they left off, scoring runs in bulk and getting dominant pitching to earn a five-inning shutout victory.

Payton Peterson and Grace Huber led the way for PWV, with both going and identical 3-for-4 with a triple, two runs and two RBI.

Sophia Milanowski added a pair of hits and drove in two runs for PWV.

Lauren Emery picked up the win, allowing three hits with no walks and four strikeouts in tossing a complete-game shutout.

PWV has a key doubleheader matchup against Ocosta starting at 3 p.m. on Tuesday in Westport.

Ocosta’s offense erupted en route to a 26-10 six-inning victory over Naselle on Friday in Naselle.

Ocosta (7-2) scored eight runs in each of the first and third innings and added nine in the sixth as the Wildcats smacked 18 hits as a team and benefited from 10 Comets errors.

Jessie Gilbert and Brynn Rasmus led the way for Ocosta. Gilbert went 4-for-6 with two doubles, three runs and five RBI with Rasmus going 4-for-6 with a pair of doubles, two runs and five RBI.

Zaida Morales added three hits with two doubles, two runs and five RBI.

Joahah Rosander earned the win, allowing 10 runs – four earned – on eight hits and six walks with seven strikeouts in six innings of work.

Elma 16, Hoquiam 5

Elma capitalized on Hoquiam miscues to earn a 16-5 six-inning victory on Friday in Hoquiam.

The Grizzlies (2-7, 0-5 1A Evergreen) took a 4-1 lead at the end of the first inning without the benefit of a base hit. Jake Templer was hit by a pitch from Elma starter Gibson Cain with the bases loaded to push across Dom Stanstipher to tie the game at 1-1. Hoquiam took the lead later in the frame when a squeeze bunt by Ethan McLucas led to a two-runs scoring on an Elma error. Mick Bozich made it a 4-1 game when he crossed the plate on a passed ball.

But the wheels came off for Hoquiam in the top of the third as Elma scored nine runs on four hits and helped by four walks and three Grizzlies errors.

Elma (7-2, 4-0) took a 9-4 lead on a three-run triple by Eastin Wright followed by an RBI single by Cain to make it 10-4 after three innings.

The Eagles added a run in the fourth, two in the fifth and closed out the scoring with three in the sixth capped by a Cain RBI single to score Jack Alexander.

Cain earned the win, allowing four runs – one earned – on one hit, two walks and a strikeout over three innings of work.

Temper picked up the loss, allowing 10 runs – none earned – on four hits, six walks and three strikeouts in three innings pitched.

“The top of the third hurt us and we could not recover,” Hoquiam head coach Steve Jump said. “It was not a lack of hustle, but a lack of focus and just making the routine plays that we make every day in practice. … The solution is simple, we just need to play with some grit and confidence. Everything else will fall into place. Despite our losses this season, the positive attitudes and willingness to always strive for improvement has been inspiring.”

Cain went 3-of-4 with a triple, two runs scored and two RBI.

Wright was 2-for-5 with a triple, two runs and four RBI.

Templer (1-2, 2B, R, RBI) and Joey Bozich (1-3) each had hits for Hoquiam.

Hoquiam hosts Tenino at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

Aberdeen found it difficult to slow Rochester’s offense in an 11-4 loss on Friday in Aberdeen.

The Bobcats (6-6, 4-4 2A Evergreen) trailed 4-0 after the top half of the first inning but rallied in the bottom of the second, capped by Bubba Jones’ two-out single to score Kyle Miller to tie the game at 4-all.

But the Warriors offense continued to hammer Bobcats pitching, scoring a run in the third to regain the lead followed by three in the fourth and three runs combined in the fifth and sixth innings to take control of the game.

Aberdeen managed just two hits after the four-run second, with Goings knocking a single in the sixth and Trey Anderson recording a single in the seventh.

Goings went 2-for-4 to lead Aberdeen.
