Multiple Aberdeen track and field athletes won their respective events while setting new personal-bests as the Bobcats faced Black Hills on Wednesday at Miller Junior High School in Aberdeen.

Aberdeen’s boys team beat Black Hills 97-27 and was led by several multi-event winners.

Senior sprinter Luke Niemi won the boys 200 meters and paced Aberdeen in a notable 100-meter sprint, setting a new personal-best of 11.40 to pick up the win.

Jeremy Sawyer set a new season-best with a time of 11.46 to come in second followed by Isaac Garcia (11.78) and Micah Schroeder (11.90) in third and fourth-place, respectively, both setting new personal-best times.

Garcia won the 400 with a time of 54.04 and set a new personal-best in the long jump with a mark of 19 feet, 11.5 inches.

Hurdler Caleb Schimelpfenig won both the 110-meter hurdles (18.46) and the 300 hurdles, the latter with a new PR time of 44.19.

Of all the top performances for Aberdeen on Wednesday, arguably the most notable was that of junior thrower Tyler Bates, who won the shot put with a heave of 50-8.25 and won the discus with a throw of 163-5.5. Bates’ mark in the discus set a new personal-best – more than a foot better than his state-championship mark last year and good enough for fourth best in the state this season.

Aberdeen’s girls team scored 34 points to finish behind Black Hills (96 points) on Wednesday.

PREP BOYS SOCCER

Montesano 2, Raymond-South Bend 1

Montesano had its closest call in league play this season, edging Raymond-South Bend 2-1 on Wednesday in South Bend.

Trailing 1-0 late in the second half, the Bulldogs (12-1 overall, 12-0 1A Evergreen) rallied behind two goals from sophomore standout Felix Romero to defeat the much-improved Ravens (7-8, 5-7) and clinch the 1A Evergreen League title.

“They were determined and brought it to us,” Montesano head coach Fidel Sanchez said of the Ravens’ effort. “They had a good plan and set themselves up pretty good.”

The Ravens scored on an angled shot from approximately 25-yards out to go up 1-0 in the 50th minute.

Monte wouldn’t get on the scoreboard until the final 10 minutes of the game against upset-minded Raymond-South Bend. The Bulldogs got the equalizer when a shot by Cristofer Tobar was saved by the RSB goal keeper. Mateo Sanchez’s rebound shot was also blocked, but Romero got to the ball and converted on Monte’s third attempt to tie the game at 1-all in the 70th minute.

Eight minutes later, Romero would give the Bulldogs the lead with an incredible 40-yard shot off a free kick that sailed just under the crossbar for a 2-1 lead.

For a Monte team that has been on the positive side of several routs this season, Coach Sanchez was glad to see his team’s reaction after trailing late in the game.

“The good thing is that I was glad we were down because I want to know what this team is capable of when we are down,” he said. “We fought back in this one.”

The win gives Monte a two-game lead ahead of Eatonville in the league standings and clinches the Bulldogs’ first league title since 2010.

“It’s a good accomplishment for these boys considering where we came from. We had a young, inexperienced team just two years ago and were very limited with what we had,” Coach Sanchez said. “Now, for them to be league champs two years later, that’s remarkable for these boys to accomplish. We just got to keep it going.”

Montesano’s junior varsity team won 2-0 on Wednesday, with Nolan Swenson scoring two goals for the Bulldogs.

Montesano plays at Elma at 7 p.m. on Friday.

RSB hosts Eatonville at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Aberdeen 2, Tumwater 1

Aberdeen cemented the top spot in the 2A Evergreen League with a rousing 2-1 overtime victory over Tumwater on Wednesday in Tumwater.

Playing what head coach Larry Fleming dubbed “a very physical and frustrating game,” the Bobcats (13-0 overall, 10-0 2A Evergreen) kept their composure and were rewarded with a goal when senior midfielder Gil Lopez blistered a 25-yard shot just before halftime.

Aberdeen continued to pressure Tumwater in the second half, but failed to cash in on multiple scoring chances.

With the door left open, the Thunderbirds (6-7-1, 6-5) tied the game when a misplayed ball by the Aberdeen defense led to a Tumwater 1-on-1 situation in the 60th minute.

In the first sudden-death overtime, senior winger Carlos Mendoza’s shot was blocked with the rebound finding the foot of Elmer Torres, who turned and chipped in a shot from 12-yards out to set off a Bobcats celebration on Tumwater’s home pitch.

“A very rough game with many players coming away with bruises,” Fleming said. “But we kept our heads and just went to work creating chance after chance, and finally were able to capitalize for the golden-goal win.”

With the victory, the state’s freshly-minted No. 1 team set the school record for consecutive wins to start the season and locked up the league championship.

Aberdeen hosts Shelton at 7 p.m. on Friday. Senior Night and Youth Soccer Night festivities will be celebrated during the game.

The Grizzlies doubled the lead when Ulises Morelia scored off Fabian’s second assist of the game in the second half to beat last-place Ilwaco (1-13, 0-12).

“We came out with some different players tonight. We have had to adjust some things to get these guys on the right path and it was a fun game and that is just what these guys needed, to have fun on the field,” Hoquiam head coach John Johnson said. “I feel very good about how everyone played tonight. We have been relying on Kaj Krauze as our keeper and he has showed out in a big way for us.”
