Indians sweep

OCEAN SHORES — Drew Rose pitched a five-inning no-hitter as South Bend re-launched its baseball program by sweeping North Beach, 11-0 and 8-6, in a Pacific League doubleheader on Thursday at the North Bay Park.

Rose struck out 14 as the Indians prevailed in their first baseball game since 1986. He also led the Tribe’s attack with three hits.

“He was extremely dominant,” South Bend coach Jim Bleecker said. “He’s in midseason form with his arm and it showed.”

“We’ve got a lot of new, first-year players,” North Beach coach Dave Hinchen said. “(Facing) Drew Rose was a baptism of fire. We were just overwhelmed.”

Chase Flynn pitched four innings of strong relief as South Bend rallied from an early 4-1 deficit to take the second game. Rose and Lucas King each doubled twice for the Tribe.

Marcus Pope had two hits, including a double, in the nightcap for North Beach.

On Tuesday, South Bend (2-0) travels to Northwest Christian for a doubleheader. North Beach hosts Mary M. Knight in a non-leaguer.

Wildcats split with Fishermen

WESPORT — A couple of early errors cost Ocosta the first half of a doubleheader with Ilwaco on Thursday, but patience at the plate gave the Wildcats the win in the nightcap of the Pacific 2B League contests at GAR Park.

The Wildcats (1-1) came up on the short end of a pitching duel in the first game. Ocosta committed two errors in the first inning, which led to two runs for the Fishermen and that was all Ilwaco would need behind the pitching of Zac Tapio. The senior struck out 11 batters and held Ocosta to just one run over six innings of work.

Ocosta freshman Cole Hatton almost matched Tapio in the duel with nine strikeouts in five innings of work, but the Wildcats never were able to overcome the early deficit.

“It was a well-pitched game by both pitchers and unfortunately we didn’t come up with a timely hit,” Ocosta head coach Mike Allton said. “We were also a little sloppy in the field. Going up against a good pitcher, we couldn’t afford those errors.”

In the second game, Ocosta’s offense finally got going in the seventh inning with a little help from some errant pitching. The Fisherman walked six batters and Ocosta’s Matthew Hart came up with an extra base hit just when the Wildcats needed it. Hart doubled to help the offensive spurt as Ocosta scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to rally to victory.

“We started out a little shaky in the field, but once we settled down, we played well,” Allton said. “We were patient at the plate and it ended on a walk-off walk to Sam Quinby.”

Allton cited all of the Ocosta pitchers for their efforts, especially Hatton. The Wildcats only allowed four walks on the day.

Ocosta hosts the Montesano junior varsity today.

Bulldogs 0, Wolves 0

TUMWATER — Montesano’s squad picked up its second scoreless non-league draw of the week by holding host Black Hills at bay on Thursday night at Tumwater Stadium.

On Monday, Montesano finished with a 0-0 tie with Tumwater at home before losing 2-1 on the road at King’s Way Christian on Tuesday.

“Black Hills is a pretty good team; it controlled the ball most of the time, but we got a few chances,” Montesano head coach Rick Denholm said.

Wayman Thoemmes was cited by Denholm for his work in goal, along with his defense, against the Wolves.

“Even Black Hills’ coach came up to us and said that he didn’t want to face (Thoemmes) the rest of the season,” Denholm added.

On Tuesday, Montesano (0-2-1) stays home to greet Centralia in a non-league contest.

Wildcats 6, Eagles 0

LA CENTER — Visiting Elma was unable to crack La Center’s defense in a non-league road loss on Friday night.

The Eagles (0-3) were without goalkeeper A.J. Hernandez, who was hurt on Thursday night against Aberdeen.

“Overall, we are a very thin team,” Elma head coach Carson Seaberg said. “We miss our goalkeeper and that’s been apparent over the last two games. There was no JV game, so we brought up some of the JV players in order to have enough players. We’re making improvements, but we’re not where we need to be.”

On Tuesday, Elma will host Rochester at Davis Field in a non-league contest.

South Bend meet

SOUTH BEND — Marcus Anderson won three events to help Raymond’s boys take team honors in a multi-school meet hosted by South Bend on Thursday.

The Gulls amassed 142 1/2 points, 15 1/2 ahead of Ilwaco. South Bend was third with 95 1/2 points.

Ilwaco took the girls meet with 128 points. Willapa Valley was second with 95.

Anderson won the boys long jump and triple jump with good early season marks of 20-7 1/2 and 39-8, respectively. He also took the 400 meters and tied for South Bend’s Jacob Strozyk for the best mark (5-10) in the high jump, although Strozyk won on fewer misses.

Raymond’s Ricky Robinett, returning to track after a year’s absence, won the boys pole vault. Seagull coach Mike Tully also cited the performance of Austin Phimmasone in the 800 meters.

Tully was pleasantly surprised by the outcome, saying he considered Ilwaco as the boys favorite.

“It hadn’t even crossed my mind that we’d be in contention to win it until I saw the results,” Tully said.

Making her competitive debut after recovering from knee surgery that had sidelined her since last summer, Raymond’s Karlee Freeman won her specialty by throwing 144-6 in the girls discus. Attempting the javelin for the first time in competition, she also won that event with a 100-7 mark.

Hannah Cook took the 400 meters, Brooke Friese the pole vault and freshman Hallee Layman the shot put to spark a strong showing by Willapa Valley’s girls.

“We’ve got a lot of young kids in varsity positions and doing a pretty good job right out of the gate,” Viking coach Dave Ege said. “I’m really pleased where we’re at. I thought we’d be a lot farther behind because of the weather.”

South Bend coach Steve Lazelle was also happy with his team’s overall showing. Among other accomplishments, South Bend’s A.J. Sanchez and Hannah Byington swept the boys and girls 100 meters.

“I thought our kids competed really well and did well for the amount of young kids we had,” Lazelle said.

Wishkah’s Maggie Sorensen and Duncan Palmgren were cited for their performances by coach Bob Eager.

“We had snow on our field (until) last Friday,” Eager said. “We did quite well for hardly any practice outside.”

Chief Leschi Meet

PUYALLUP — Ocosta and North Beach both came away with multiple individual winners at the Pacific 2B League meet at Chief Leschi on Thursday.

The Hyaks took second as a team on the boys and girls side behind Northwest Christian in both competitions.

“We have a small contingent of veterans that performed well, but we also have a group of budding talent that got some experience today,” North Beach head coach Peter Fry said. “It was good for our first meet, with a lot of promise.”

Ocosta’s Cosmo Silver won the 300 meter hurdles with a time of 46.84 seconds, took the pole vault with a distance of 11 feet and topped the field in the long jump with the distance of 18 feet, 11 1/2 inches.

North Beach’s Seth Bridge was also a multiple winner with titles in the shot put and discus. Bridge recorded a distance of 50-3 in the shot put and threw 173-05 in the discus.

On the girls side, North Beach’s Natasha Fruh won the shot put with a distance of 34-1 and Tawni Blankenship cleared a height of eight feet to win the pole vault.

The Wildcats only win on the girls side came in the 4×200 meter relay with the team of Alivia Marsh, Rebecca Holm, Kennedy Merino and Kathryn Anderson.

Taholah’s Celisha Ralston won the discus with a throw of 105-8.

Fry cited Bridge, freshman Evan Johnson and freshman Lorin Cox for their strong performances.
