Led by a record-breaking performance by Willapa Valley’s Lauren McGough, four Twin Harbors track and field stars claimed state titles at the WIAA State Track & Field Championships last week.

McGough was a standout for the Vikings girls team, winning the 1B state title with a personal-best 134 foot, nine inch throw in the javelin and wowing the crowd at Zaepfel Stadium in Yakima by repeating as the state champion in the pole vault with a historic performance.

On Friday, McGough cleared a personal-best vault of 12-03, easily beating the second-place mark of Pomeroy’s Katie Boyer (9-0) and demolishing the 1B-class record of 10-03 by Mount Vernon Christian’s Melyssa Whitener set in 2015.

McGough wasn’t the only athlete wearing Viking blue to win a state title at the meet.

On Saturday, Willapa Valley senior Brooklyn Patrick won a state championship in the 100-meter dash with a time of 13.30, just beating Mt. Vernon Christian’s Caitlin VanderKooy by three-hundredths of a second.

Patrick also finished second in the girls 100 hurdles while teammate Emily Wilson placed second in the girls 400 with a personal-record time of 1:01.54.

Patrick, Julianna Lynch, McGough and Wilson teamed up to place third in the girls 4×100 relay with a time of 52.52 as the Vikings placed fifth in the team standings with 58 points.

In the girls 2B meet – also held at Eisenhower High School in Yakima – Raymond’s Karsyn Freeman won the discus with a personal-best throw of 129-0.

“There is something about the Freemans and the discus. They obviously have a knack for it,” Raymond head coach Mike Tully said, eluding to Karsyn’s older sister Karlee, a former Raymond discus state-champion and current 2B class record-holder. “Karsyn didn’t pick up the discus until midway through last year and the progress she has made is remarkable. We knew that she had a chance to win it, but there were a bunch of other girls coming in that were really close to her best mark. She threw her 129-0 toss on her second attempt and just blew away the competition.”

Montesano junior Gabe Bodwell won a state championship with an impressive leap of 6-02 to win the state title in the 1A state meet in Yakima.

Bodwell also had a top-three placement in the javelin, taking second with a personal-record throw of 170-04.

Raymond’s boys team placed fourth overall with 43.5 points at the 2B state meet, led by top-three finishes by seniors Morgan Anderson and Austin Snodgrass.

Snodgrass placed second in the discus with a PR-throw of 148-01 while Anderson placed second in both the 110 hurdles (15.03 PR) and triple jump (42-5.75 PR).

Anderson’s 110-hurdles time broke the school record of Jace Freeman, who ran a 15.04 in 2016, and finished just two-hundredths of a second behind La Conner’s Tommy Murdock in a thrilling photo-finish race.

“Our kids met or exceeded our expectations in just about every event. Going into the meet, we knew that the boys could potentially get to the 40-point mark that typically puts teams in trophy contention. After good days on Thursday and Friday, we knew it was going to come down to five or six teams for the four (team) trophies. We were able to get some great performances on Saturday, and we were able to bring home the fourth-place trophy. The guys missed fourth place by a half-point last year, so it was good to see them get it this year,” Raymond head coach Mike Tully said. “I can’t say enough good things about the way the kids competed over the weekend. The coaching staff is really proud of them and what they accomplished.”

South Bend’s Judah Milton and Robby Stigall placed in the top three in their respective events. Milton took second in the boys 300 hurdles with a PR-time of 40.29 with Stigall placing third in the discus with a throw of 148-01, also a personal-best.

In the girls 1A meet, Montesano senior Lilly Causey placed second in the 200 with a PR-time of 25.83. Causey also medaled in the 100, placing fifth overall.

Hoquiam senior Chloe Kennedy placed third in the girls high jump, clearing a personal-best 5-02 to earn a state medal.

The North Beach Hyaks found success at the 2B state meet, with junior Tyrell Hovland clearing 6-0 to place third in the boys high jump and the girls 4×400 relay team making history.

Sophomore Katana Capoeman, senior Kaci Osborne-Hansen, senior Abigail Conn and senior Malia Cox combined to place fourth in the girls 4×400, crossing the line with a time of 4:23.38, a new school record.

“We had a good meet with many personal records set. Several of our young kids will be back to do even better next year,” North Beach head coach Peter Fry said. “All of our seniors are coming home with a medal, which is so satisfying for them and that girls 4×4 group really bonded over the course of the season and pulled off a historic run at the perfect moment.”
