RAINIER — Elma used its relay strength to sweep both team titles in the Rainier Icebreaker Invitational track meet on Saturday.

The Eagles nipped Montesano, 70-68, to win the girls team crown. They tied with Pe Ell for boys team honors with 61 points. Raymond was third among the boys with 52 points.

Elma won only one individual event, with Ira Hartford prevailing in the boys 200 meters. But the Eagles swept all three boys relays (including an 800-meter medley) and the girls sprint relay.

Hartford, Chris Badgley, Cody Vollan, Brandon Butcher, Tanner Kripelz, Ray Billerbeck and Jadyn Edenstrom participated in the boys relays, while Jayla Mason, Jillian Bieker, Kayli Johnson and Beka Lensegrav teamed up in the girls sprint relay.

Shayla Floch was a double winner for Montesano’s girls, clearing 4-10 in the high jump and winning the long jump with a leap of 15-3 into a strong wind.

Teammate Jordan Spradlin, the reigning state 1A champion, captured the girls shot at 45 feet.

Monte’s Jordan Tibbett took the boys 800 meters in 2:16.97.

“It was pretty good for a first meet,” Montesano girls coach Doug Schupbach said. “We have a lot of young kids and I thought we did really well.”

Schupbach also cited the performances of Sam Winter and Donovan Albert.

Raymond’s Karlee Freeman uncorked a throw of 139-3 in the girls discus to top Spradlin in a battle of state champions.

Seagull coach Mike Tully was also pleased with the performance of Jace Duckworth, who won the boys pole vault with a good early season mark of 12-6.

“At least the top four pole vaulters in the district were three and he outdueled all of them,” Tully said.

Raymond’s Angel Evans, who competed last year for Naselle, tied the school record in the girls pole vault at 8 feet.

Hoquiam’s Devin Merksick, a much-heralded transfer from Nebraska, cleared 6-2 in less than ideal conditions to easily take the boys high jump. He barely missed at 6-4.

Grizzly sophomore Elyse Goulet took the girls 400 meters and teamed with Alexis and Kayla Delahanty and Courtney McCormick to win the girls mile relay.

Considering that poor weather has prevented his team from working extensively on technical aspects of field events, Hoquiam coach Tim Pelan was pleased with his team’s effort.

“In this meet, we err on the side of caution,” Pelan added. “We don’t unload our kids in a a lot of events.”

Hoquiam’s Lutra Felten was cited for a significant personal best in the boys pole vault.

North Beach’s Seth Bridge was a double winner in the boys throws. He won the shot put with a throw of 50-9 and blew away his competition with a 161-6 mark in the discus. Teammate Rodney Washington was second to Merksick in the high jump.

Aberdeen’s Bryan Sidor ran 54.3 to take the boys 400 meters.

South Bend placed in several events. A.J. Sanchez, second in the boys 300 hurdles and long jump, and Hannah Byington were credited by coach Steve Lazelle with particularly fine showings.

Hannah Cook (girls 400) and Brooke Friese (girls pole vault) registered second-place finishes for Willapa Valley.

Ocosta coach Aaron Anderson cited Dustyn Taylor for his performance in the boys 300 hurdles.
