Spencer leads Elma equestrian team at WASHET State Championships

Eagles junior breaks state-record in winning keyhole state title

Eagles junior Emmie Spencer had a record-breaking performance to lead the Elma High School equestrian team at the Washington High School Equestrian Team State Championships May 19-21 in Moses Lake.

Spencer placed first in the keyhole event to win a state title with a time of 6.780 seconds. The mark broke the state record of Eatonville’s Gionna Mervyn, who previously held the record with a time of 6.918 set in Grant County in 2018.

Elma’s Randi Conrad and Kendra McDowel teamed up to place second and win a state silver medal in the team sorting event.

Spencer also placed 11th in the figure-eight event and combined with Morgan Jonsson to place eighth in the briangle competition.

The team of Spencer, Johnsson, Conrad and Tylee Kelly placed seventh in the Canadian flags competition.

Conrad rode to an 18th-place finish in the poles event.

The Eagles will compete at the Pacific Northwest Invitational Championship in Redmond, Oregon June 16-18.
