Several local teams faced some of the state’s heavy hitters as we review Twin Harbors prep football action for Week 4 of the season.
PREP FOOTBALL
Napavine 60, Pe Ell-Willapa Valley 14
For a brief few minutes in its game against defending-champion Napavine, the Pe Ell-Willapa Valley Titans felt as though they had a shot.
Then the top-ranked Tigers dashed those hopes in the blink of an eye.
Napavine scored two quick touchdowns late in the second quarter to turn the game on its ear, leading to a 60-14 PWV loss on Friday in Napavine.
The Titans (3-1 overall, 1-1 2B Central-North) were down 14-6 in the second quarter after Tyson Portmann scored on a 1-yard touchdown run.
Napavine scored to make it 22-6 and with time winding down in the second quarter, PWV head coach Nate Smith was optimistic the game would be close going into the second half.
“I thought we were going to go into halftime down 22-6 and we were going to get the ball at the half and be OK,” he said. “Then they reeled off two touchdowns right in a row and it was just ‘oh boy.’
Napavine (4-0, 2-0) scored 24 points in the second quarter, capped by a touchdown with just eight seconds left in the half, to take a commanding 32-point lead at the break.
“All of a sudden you look up and its 38-6 at halftime and it’s like, ‘That just broke our back,’” Smith said.
PWV took the opening kickoff of the second half and charged downfield to score a touchdown on a 4-yard run from Cody Strozyk, who also ran in the two-point conversion.

Napavine responded with a 39-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Ashton Demarest to receiver Colin Shields followed by a Demarest pass to James Grose for a 25-yard score and a 52-14 lead.
PWV had 191 total yards, 138 through the air on 9-of-14 passing from quarterback Nathan Fluke.
“We played fairly well against them. They just have so many weapons and we couldn’t get a pass rush on their quarterback and he just sat back there and threw the ball,” Smith said.
PWV hosts Morton-White Pass at 7 p.m. Friday in Pe Ell.

Elma 27, Columbia (White Salmon) 6
Despite being without its starting quarterback, Elma picked up a much-needed 27-6 victory over Columbia (White Salmon) on Friday in Elma.
With senior Carter Studer dealing with a minor undisclosed injury, sophomore backup Isaac McGaffey took the reigns and managed the Eagles to an early lead, scoring on a 5-yard run on the team’s opening possession.
“He did a great job just commanding the offense right down the field,” said Elma co-head coach Casey Doyle, who added the team’s No. 1 goal was scoring on the opening drive. “It was a nice, sustained drive. He showed a lot of poise and comfort out there running the offense.”
Elma (2-3) blew the game open in the second quarter, scoring 20 points in a variety of ways.
Down 7-6 after a touchdown run by Bruins running back Wongani Schlegel, Elma punter Jake Meadows saw something in the Bruins special teams and optioned for a fake punt on a 4th-and-nine play. Meadows found daylight, running for 20 yards and a critical first down.
A few plays later, Elma scored on a bit of trickery when receiver Jackson Schneider found the end zone on a 32-yard half-back pass from Bo Muller.
Later in the second quarter, McGaffey connected with receiver Jacob Meadows for a 51-yard touchdown pass followed by a McGaffey 33-yard pick-six interception return. Matthew Wood’s extra point put the Eagles up 27-6 at halftime.
McGaffey went 10-for-17 for 103 yards and a touchdown without throwing an interception.
The Eagles gained 198 yards of total offense and recovered two CWS fumbles in the game.
“It puts the energy back in. You get a little more pep in your step and start having a little more pride in what you’re doing,” Doyle said of the win that snapped a three-game losing streak. “We’re stressing to play mistake-free football and play as hard as you can and the boys did that tonight.”
Elma plays at Hoquiam in a 1A Evergreen League matchup of two Twin Harbors teams at 7 p.m. Friday at Olympic Stadium in Hoquiam.

Raymond-South Bend 62, Adna 36
Raymond-South Bend’s high-powered offense was clicking on all cylinders in a 62-36 victory over Adna on Friday in Adna.
The Ravens (3-1) racked up 424 yards of offense and scored 41 points in the first half against the Pirates (1-3).
RSB’s Ferrill Johnson opened the game with an 83-yard kickoff return for a touchdown, one of four Ravens touchdowns of 35-yards or more.
RSB running back Robbie Stigall scored on a 41-yard run, quarterback Austin Snodgrass on touchdown runs of 39 and 64 yards and a 65-yard pass from Snodgrass to receiver Ashton Kongbouakhay.
Snodgrass (8 carries, 138 yards) and Stigall (10-107) each rushed for over 100 yards in the game.

Naselle 48, Ocosta 19
For the second time in three weeks, Ocosta lost to Naselle.
The Wildcats fell 48-19 in an 8-man contest on Friday at Naselle High School.
Tarren Lewis scored on a 5-yard run for the Wildcats to take a 7-6 lead in the first quarter, but Naselle would follow by scoring 30 straight points to take a 36-7 halftime lead.
Aiden Davis recovered a Naselle fumble in the third quarter, which led to a 56-yard touchdown pass from Lewis to Alexis Agramon a few plays later.
In the fourth quarter, Ocosta’s Andrew Martin recovered another Comets fumble. Martin would then take a handoff and scamper 50 yards for the Wildcats’ final score of the evening.
Ocosta hosts North Beach at 7 p.m. on Friday.
Proceeds from the game will benefit former Ocosta player Justin Strong’s son, Ryler, who was diagnosed with Sanfilippo Syndrome, a rare disease affecting the brain and spinal cord for which there is no cure.
Lake Quinault 40, Mary M. Knight 18
In their second meeting in three weeks, Lake Quinault defeated Mary M. Knight 40-18 in a 6-man game on Saturday at Mary M. Knight High School.
Down 18-12 at the half, the Elks (3-0) outscored the Owls (0-3) 28-0 in the second half partly due to a four-touchdown performance from junior Augustin Hermosillo and an impassioned halftime speech from head coach Melvyn Houtz.
“I haven’t had to reach into that bag of tools in a long time,” Houtz said. “It was more than the riot act. … It was a pretty emotional moment and they responded. We made some adjustments and came out and it was a different second half.”
Missing starting seniors Adan Morfin and Luis Farias, Houtz said he had to fire up his backups to raise their level of play.
“What I told them at halftime was, ‘I want you to swarm to the ball and don’t give up because you think your teammate is going to make the tackle. I want you all there. I want two or three people making the tackle,” he said. “They responded and we did well in the second half.”
Aside from Hermosillo, who stepped in as the feature back in place of the injured Farias, senior Danny Ceja scored a touchdown and was commended by Houtz for his play.
“It was a good team effort,” Houtz said. “We had to move people around and plug them in. … It was a good team win. … It came down to who executed better in the rain and that’s what happened.”
Lake Quinault faced Evergreen Lutheran (Tacoma) at 5 p.m. Saturday at Franklin Pierce High School.
Toutle Lake 28, North Beach 26
North Beach fell just short of its first win of the season in a 28-26 loss to Toutle Lake in an 8-man game on Friday in Toutle Lake.
The Hyaks (0-3) led 8-6 at the half of a game that was close throughout, largely because of turnovers.
Senior quarterback Wyeland Lomedico went 8-for-23 for 110 yards with three interceptions while rushing for 160 yards and a touchdown on seven carries.
Tyrrell Curry-Sith had 11 carries for 90 yards and a pair of touchdowns for North Beach.
Tycen Ross caught two passes for 35 yards with a touchdown for the Hyaks.
Jade Charley recorded an interception with Dakota Russell, Adan Wollum and Lomedico each recovering a fumble for North Beach.
The Hyaks play at Wahkiakum at 7 p.m. on Friday.

WA School for Deaf 32, Wishkah Valley 27
Down by 18 at halftime, a Wishkah Valley second-half surge fell just short in a 32-27 loss in a 6-man game on Saturday at Wishkah Valley High School.
Trailing 25-7 after a first half filled with missed tackles and unsustained blocking, the Loggers (0-3) rallied to pull to within five points with two minutes to go in the game.
Wishkah appeared to have scored the game-winning touchdown with 20 seconds left, but the Loggers were called for holding, negating the touchdown.
Wishkah failed to get back into the end zone and the game ended at 32-27.
“It was a very disappointing ending, but I’m very proud of the players for their toughness and determination in the second half,” Wishkah head coach Eric Erickson said. “I’ve never been part of such a dramatic shift in halves like that and they deserve all the credit.”
Sophomore Boady Dhooghe filled in at quarterback – the Loggers’ fourth player to start under center this season – and went 7-for-19 for 129 yards and two touchdowns.
Junior Aiden Weidenmann “really stood out,” according to Erickson, scoring three touchdowns while rushing for 94 yards, catching three passes for 68 yards and returning a kick for a score.
Sophomore Kohl Brandner had 139 total yards of offsense (99 rushing, 40 receiving) while Dhooghe (9.5 tackles), freshman Josh Ellis (9 tackles) and junior Carson Harris (interception) led the Loggers defense.
Wishkah plays at Easton at 1 p.m. Saturday.
