Aberdeen pair shoots tourney record in taking Sibley title

“It’s a great day to have a great day.”

Those were the words an unidentified Aberdeen Bobcat as the team arrived at the Alderbrook Golf Course in Union on Monday for the annual Sibley Scramble.

By the end of the round, those words would be proved prophetic.

Playing in a two-player scramble format, Bobcats Baylor Ainsworth and Charlie Ancich combined to shoot a tournament-record 64, leading Aberdeen to the team title with a score of 181.

“Yes, it was a great day to be a Bobcat,” Aberdeen head coach Dan Sundstrom said. “Golf is all about hitting fairways and greens. On the round, Charlie (Ancich) couldn’t miss a fairway and Baylor (Ainsworth) couldn’t miss green. What a great combination. I guess that’s why they shot a tournament record.”

The duo’s 18-hole score of 64 was 8-under par for the 18-hole round.

Ancich and Ainsworth were joined by Hunter Eisele and Trevon Ramos, who combined to shoot a respectable 77 to round out Aberdeen’s final score, which was four strokes better than second-place Tumwater.

Aberdeen’s Skyler Dawson and Spencer Hill missed the final score with a round of 94.

Eisele won the Long Drive Red contest with Ancich winning Closest to Pin Red competition with a shot 22-feet, one-inch from the 12th hole.

Elma placed sixth overall with a score of 155.

Scoring for the Eagles was the combo of Grant Vessey/Kohan Morrison (76) and Robby Allen/Brody Palmer (79).

Montesano placed eighth on the day with a final score of 167.

Ayden Sauer and Colton Grubb (71) and the duo of Caden Grubb and Gavin Root (92) figured into the Bulldogs score.

Montesano cruised to a 20-stroke victory 183-203 over Kalama on Tuesday at the Grays Harbor Country Club.

The Bulldogs had its top four golfers shoot under 50 for their 9-hole rounds.

Gavin Root led the way for Monte with a 44 as teammates Ayden Sauer (45), Colton Grubb (47) and Rufus Krawsowski (47) also shot sub-50.

Elma 177, La Center 181

Elma overcame the elements and an impressive La Center Wildcats squad to emerge with a 177-181 win on Tuesday at the Lewis River Golf Course in Woodland.

The Eagles had three golfers – Brody Palmer, Cason Seaberg and Kohan Morrison – shoot 44 on the day with teammate Robby Allen close behind at 45.

Elma would need every bit of that low scoring as soggy course conditions and a 3-over par round from La Center’s Blaine Joner (38) kept the score close.

“Wet and sloppy conditions, but very consistent golf throughout the day. Even with a 30-minute delay due to thunder half way through, the boys came out of the break feeling confident and played great,” Elma head coach Collin McMaster said. “A few extra putts on the day for our team, but that’s to be expected with wet greens, especially ones that we aren’t used to playing. Overall, our tightest match of the year but fortunate to walk out with another win.”

MEN’S COLLEGE GOLF

GHC’s Tamker rallies to place third overall

Grays Harbor College men’s golfer Rasmus Tamker rallied to shoot a 3-under par score of 69 in the second day of the Grays Harbor College-Pacific Lutheran University Collegiate Open on Tuesday at The Home Course in DuPont.

Tamker was tied for 10th place entering Tuesday and shaved five strokes off his first-round score to move up seven spots in his first collegiate tournament.

GIRLS PREP SOCCER

Ocosta 10, Ilwaco 0

Ocosta’s offense was red hot in a 10-0 win over Ilwaco on Wednesday in Westport.

The Wildcats (5-3 overall, 2-1 2B Central-Pacific) completed over 75% of its passes and got another huge game from eighth-grade offensive dynamo Bristol Towle, who scored six goals for the third time this season.

Towle scored on a through pass from Scarlett Nelson in the third minute followed by Kylee Denny stealing a pass and scoring just three minutes later.

Brizeyda Ayala Rios sent a cross to Towle for a goal in the 16th minute.

Towle followed that up by dribbling through Ilwaco defenders and driving a shot into the net for a hat trick and a 4-0 lead in the 22nd minute.

Ocosta would score six more times in the second half, Towle recording three more goals while Denny would add two more for a hat trick of her own.

Gabby Ness also scored a goal in the second half.

Nelson finished the game with two assists with Denny and Marlee Cobain each tallying an assist in the second half.

“We were able to get nine players with multiple shots in the game. We had our best passing completion in the past 12 years. The girls are looking up and finding the open player and it is paying off,” Ocosta head coach Mike King said. “Our defense has been doing an outstanding job this week.”

King cited the play of Evelyn Tello, Kennedy Reynolds, Joanah Rosander and Ness.

Ocosta goal keepers Amelia Saunders and Hollys Baldwin combined for their fourth shutout of the season.

Ocosta plays in a non-league contest at Hoquiam at 6 p.m. Thursday.

Raymond-South Bend fell to Napavine in straight sets in a non-league contest on Wednesday in Napavine.

The Ravens (6-3) lost 25-14, 25-17 and 25-15 against a Napavine team that played well in multiple facets of the game.

“Napavine serves aggressively and runs a very quick offense and we didn’t handle that well,” RSB head coach Julie Jewell said. “We had stretches of runs of points in all three games but we couldn’t maintain consistency.”

Emily Howell went 10-for-10 from the service line for a Ravens team that served at a 94% clip in the match.

RSB hosts Ocosta at 7 p.m. Thursday at South Bend High School in a key 2B Pacific League matchup.
