BOYS PREP GOLF

Elma 168, Montesano 186

Elma continued to play solid golf en route to a 168-186 victory over Montesano in an East County Civil War match on Thursday at Oaksridge Golf Course in Elma.

The Eagles top-four scorers shot sub-50 once again, led by Grant Vessey and Robby Allen with identical rounds of 40 to earn co-Medalist of the Match honors.

Vessey made par on four of nine holes while Allen had three pars and birdied the par-4 eighth hole.

Brody Palmer shot a 42 with Cason Seaberg carding a 46 to round out Elma’s team scoring.

“Another strong showing from our boys today versus a well coached Montesano team,” Elma head coach Collin McMaster said. “We knew we needed to be on our game today and avoid the big numbers on the card. I’d say we did just that, with every varsity player shooting 46 or lower. I couldn’t be happier for a great Senior Night at home with co-Medalists on our squad and an awesome turnout from the fans.”

Montesano posted a decent score with all four of its golfers shooting 50 or lower.

Ayden Sauer led the Bulldogs with a round of 42 with Colton Grubb (45), Caden Grubb (49) and Spencer Lovell (50) also getting on the scorecard for Montesano.

Elma’s junior varsity team won 199-221 on Thursday, led by identical rounds of 47 from Lucas Norris and Aaron Tuttle.

Monte’s JV team was led by Caden Jones with a 53.

Aberdeen 223, Rochester 278

Aberdeen won another league contest with a 223-278 victory over Rochester on Wednesday at Highland Golf Course in Cosmopolis.

Charlie Ancich put up another sub-40 score with a 1-over par 36 to earn Medalist honors, including a birdie on a long par-3 No. 6 hole.

Baylor Ainsworth and Hunter Eisele each shot a 41 over the nine-hole round, with Ainsworth making birdie on the par-4 fifth hole.

“As part of our goal setting, we hope our players are getting better and better with each match,” Aberdeen head coach Dan Sundstrom said. “This goal has been reached over these last few matches. At this pace, we should be playing our best golf around district time.”

Aberdeen takes on Black Hills at 3:30 p.m. Monday at the Tumwater Valley Golf Course.

PREP VOLLEYBALL

Raymond-South Bend 3, Ocosta 1

Raymond-South Bend won a key league game 3-1 over Ocosta on Thursday at Raymond High School.

The Ravens (7-3, 6-0 2B Pacific) got solid play from its middle line in the 25-17, 26-24, 18-25 and 25-18 victory.

Kassie Koski (8 kills, 23-25 service, 2 aces, 18 digs), Ava Baugher (8 kills, 5 digs, 16 blocks), Kyndal Koski (14-14 service, 2 aces, 21 digs) and Emily Howell (6 kills, 14-15 service) led the way for the Ravens.

“We looked a little rusty, struggling with consistency and communication. It was good for us to struggle and overcome that,” RSB head coach Julie Jewell said. “Ocosta played well tonight. The reserve play of Presley McVey, Jordynn Sedy, and Ava Pine was an important part of our win.”

Ocosta (6-4, 3-3) was led by Alexia Bradley (11 kills, 3 solo blocks), Anna Davis (7 digs, 4 solo blocks), Brynn Rasmus (27 assists) and Samantha Schlegel (20 digs, 9 kills).

“We just started out a bit slow in set one. Once we adjusted our defense, we were right in it. We had set point for the taking in set two and we just struggled with our serving,” Ocosta head coach Erin Snider said. “We are capable of big things and at this rate we are improving, we will be right where we want to be at district playoff time.”

With the win, RSB sits two games ahead of Forks for the top spot in the 2B Pacific League.

Ocosta is 1.5 games behind Forks in third place in the league standings.

Ocosta plays at Chief Leschi at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.

Raymond-South Bend faces Ilwaco at 7 p.m. Tuesday at Ilwaco High School.

Elma 3, Eatonville 0

Elma picked up its first league win with a straight-set victory over Eatonville on Thursday at Elma High School.

Elma (2-8, 1-3 1A Evergreen) won 25-15, 25-19 and 25-21 to snap a six-game losing streak.

The Eagles were led by Callie Galligan and Haydenne Bogar with seven kills apiece and setter Aubrey Moore, who had five kills and 12 assists.

“Proud of our win tonight,” Elma head coach Kendra Dunn said. “We had a great night at the net and had 24 kills as a team.”

Elma plays at Northwest Christian at 7 p.m. on Monday.

Hoquiam 3, Tenino 0

After playing two consecutive five-set matches the previous two nights, Hoquiam dug deep to pull out a straight-set victory over Tenino on Thursday in Tenino.

The Grizzlies (8-3, 3-0 1A Evergreen) won 26-24, 25-19 and 25-17.

Hoquiam was led by setter Katlyn Brodhead (30 assists), Lexi LaBounty (23 digs), Faith Prosch (12 kills, 12 digs) and Kristina Goulet (16 kills).

“I knew we were going to have a tough time mentally after playing in Eatonville Tuesday and last night’s marathon match against a rival (Aberdeen), so the fact that we pulled the win out in three sets makes me so incredibly proud of this team,” Hoquiam head coach Heather Bozich said. “We really need to rest up because we have a big week next week. I’m loving how this team is coming together right now and we’re only getting better and better.”

The Grizzlies had an important league matchup against Montesano at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Montesano High School.

GIRLS PREP SOCCER

Tenino 8, Hoquiam 0

An under-manned Hoquiam team lost a 1A Evergreen League contest to Tenino 8-0 on Thursday in Tenino.

The Grizzlies (1-8, 0-3 1A Evergreen) played with just 10 players against 11 for Tenino as Hoquiam was without four players due to injury, illness and family considerations.

The Beavers (6-4-1, 1-2) led 4-0 at halftime.

Grizzlies goal keeper Emily Brodhead had 13 saves in the game while junior Johana Sanchez-Ortiz was credited by Grizzlies head coach Corri Schmid for playing well at multiple positions.

“She just played her heart out, had a positive attitude and just kept going and I appreciated it,” Schmid said of Sanchez-Ortiz before turning her attention toward her team. “Even though we continuously are playing short, our team never gives up. They still have a positive outlook on the game.”

Hoquiam faces Montesano at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Montesano High School.

GIRLS PREP SWIMMING

Aberdeen 110, Eatonville 57

Aberdeen set some new district qualifying times in a 110-57 victory over Eatonville on Wednesday at the Grays Harbor YMCA.

Aberdeen senior Keara Burns won the 200-yard individual medley with a time of 2:44.56 to best her previous district-qualifying time.

Bobcats senior Saylor Heikkila also qualified for districts with a time of 1:23.38 to place third in the 100 backstroke.

Aberdeen won eight of the meet’s 12 events, with the winners as follows:

200 medley relay: 1, Aberdeen (Mija Hood, Wendy Neil, Harnoor Jandu, Ava Benn), 2:20.40.

200 individual medley: 1, Burns, Aberdeen, 2:44.56.
