The Bulldogs would hold an 8-0 lead by halftime and scored six goals over the final 40 minutes of the game.

“As a coach, all I can ask for is that they show up and play and make the best of it,” Hoquiam head coach Corri Schmid said of her team, which has consistently played with less than a full squad this season. “No matter what, they kept fighting and they didn’t give up.”

Montesano had 28 shots on goal and 14 corner kicks in the game.

The Bulldogs play at Tenino at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

Hoquiam hosts Elma at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

Elma 3, Shelton 1

After two tough league losses, Elma bounced back with a 3-1 non-league victory over Shelton on Tuesday at Shelton High School.

The Eagles (9-3, 2-2 1A Evergreen) trailed 1-0 at the half after a Shelton goal in the 15th minute.

Elma head coach Evan Valentine – who had experimented with formations and lineups in his team’s final non-league game of the season – switched back to his team’s standard style of play in the second half.

The strategic move paid dividends as Elma tied the game when junior forward Beta Valentine buried a free kick from 30 yards out into the back of the net in the 55th minute.

Valentine would score twice more in the game, both on give-and-go plays from Valerie Echeverria, to give the Eagles a 3-1 lead.

The victory was key for an Elma team that saw one of its pre-season goals of winning a league title likely fall by the wayside with losses to Montesano and Eatonville last week.

“We know we didn’t put ourselves in the best position. It’s unlikely that we win league now, which stinks because you want to skip that first game in districts if you can,” Coach Valentine said. “I told the team, ‘Sometimes in life, things don’t go as planned and all you can do is focus and move forward. … Don’t worry about things you can’t control. You can’t control that anymore, so let’s move forward.’”

Elma plays at Hoquiam at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

W.F. West 1, Aberdeen 0

Aberdeen slipped a spot in the battle for league playoff positioning with a 1-0 loss to W.F. West on Tuesday in Chehalis.

The Bobcats (5-5, 4-3 2A Evergreen) trailed 1-0 after W.F. West’s Emily Mallonee scored off an assist from Violet Ratkie in the 12th minute.

Aberdeen’s best chance to tie the game came late in the first half on a breakaway from senior forward Annie Troeh, but Bearcats keeper Staysha Fluetsch made the save to keep the Bobcats in a 1-0 deficit.

Aberdeen struggled to get good shots on-goal against the Bearcats (6-6, 5-3), which peppered the Bobcats net with 11 shots and 15 corner kicks.

The Bobcats offense managed five shots in the game.

Aberdeen senior goal keeper Jaylyn Phimmasone, who – along with midfielders Delaney Shoemaker and Miley Anderson – were credited for having strong games by Cats head coach Larry Fleming.

“We can’t use the playing surface as an excuse,” Fleming said. “We were outplayed and it was a disappointing performance by our girls.”

With the loss, Aberdeen slips a half-game behind W.F. West and Centralia in the league standings and now sits in fourth place.

Aberdeen’s JV team lost 1-0 on Tuesday with Ella Daniels playing well in goal for the Bobcats.

Aberdeen faced Black Hills at 7 p.m. Thursday at Black Hills High School.

BOYS PREP GOLF

Black Hills 273, Aberdeen 274

Aberdeen’s golf match on Monday at the Tumwater Valley Golf Course came down to a tiebreaker with Black Hills.

After five golfers’ scores for each team were totalled up, the teams were tied at 223.

The 2A Evergreen League’s tiebreaker is the score of each team’s sixth golfer. Black Hills’ Ethan Badger carded a 50 for his 9-hole round while Aberdeen’s Skyler Dawson was just one stroke back at 51.

That turned out to be the difference in the match as Aberdeen lost 273-274.

The Wolves’ Jack Casler took Medalist honors with a low round of 39 while Aberdeen’s Charlie Ancich was three strokes back with a 39.

Bobcat Baylor Ainsworth shot a 42 for the fifth time this season while teammate Spencer Hill broke into the 40’s for the first time in 2023 with a score of 49.

Aberdeen head coach Dan Sundstrom said his team prepared for inclement weather, but the rain held off, for the most part.

“The old saying is to prepare for the worst and hope for the best. … We had rain gear, umbrellas, and golf bag rain covers. Luckily, it only sprinkled a little during warm up,” he said. “We weren’t so lucky in the team scoring.”

Aberdeen faces Shelton at 3:30 p.m. at Highland Golf Course.

Aberdeen (274) – Charlie Ancich 39, Baylor Ainsworth 42, Hunter Eisele 44, Trevon Ramos 49, Spencer Hill 49, Skyler Dawson 51.

Black Hills (273) – Jack Casler 36, Phoenix Flores 40, Simon Nysted 48, Jace Cedergreen 49, Ezra Harris 50, Ethan Badger 50.

Tenino 173, Elma 176

Elma closed out league play with a 173-176 loss to Tenino on Tuesday at the Tahoma Valley Golf Course.

Elma’s Grant Vessey and Tenino’s David Dallaire earned co-Medalist of the Match honors with identical rounds of 38.

No Elma golfer shot higher than a 46 over nine holes of competition, but according to Elma head coach Collin McMaster, one too many miscues led to the loss.

“It is a tough pill to swallow, finishing the league season with a loss,” he said. “We had a few minor miscues that we’d love to have back. A missed putt here and a poor chip there were the difference today. A tough Tenino team that took us to the wire last match, and took it to us today, so hats off to them.”

McMaster adds that he believes his team is in good shape heading into the postseason next week.

“Overall though, I am proud of our consistent rounds as of late, which should bode well heading into districts next week,” he said.

Tenino (173) – David Dallaire 38, Gavin Burke 43, Jaxon Gore 46, Ethan Baxter 46.

Elma (176) – Grant Vessey 38, Robby Allen 46, Kohan Morrison 46, Cason Seaberg 46.
