GIRLS PREP BASKETBALL
Tumwater 28, Montesano 23
Montesano nearly pulled off the upset of the prep basketball season, coming up just short against Tumwater 28-23 on Saturday in Montesano.
The young Bulldogs (1-5 overall) had their best defensive performance of the season in holding Tumwater (6-0) to 8-of-50 from the field (16%), including 3-for-23 (13%) from the 3-point line.
“Tonight, our defense was really good. We flew around, we contested shots. Defensively I couldn’t be more proud of the effort the girls gave,” Monte head coach Mark Mansfield said. “They did everything we’ve been talking about the last couple of days and they brought it to the court tonight.”
The Bulldogs trimmed the Thunderbirds’ lead to just two late in the fourth quarter, but a Tumwater layup forced Montesano to foul down the stretch, leading to the loss.
Sophomore post Jillie Dalan had a double-double for Montesano with 16 points and 13 rebounds.
Monte junior Ava Schrader had 12 rebounds for a Bulldogs team that played even with Tumwater on the boards 33-33.
The low score also had much to do with the two teams combining to commit 40 turnovers in the game, 21 for Monte and 19 for Tumwater.
“We have work to do offensively, but our defense tonight was really good,” Mansfield said. “This was a step forward for us. Tumwater is really good, but we were tough. … If we play defense like that, we can have a lot of success going forward.”
Montesano takes on Aberdeen at 7 p.m. Monday in Aberdeen.
Tumwater 12 4 4 8 – 28
Montesano 3 6 8 6 – 23
Scoring: Montesano 16, Schrader 3, Olson 3, Stanfield 1.

BOYS PREP BASKETBALL
Elma 48, Dallas 45
Elma completed its trip to the Seaside Holiday Classic with a 48-45 win over Dallas (Oregon) on Saturday in Seaside, Oregon.
The Eagles (5-3) trailed 37-34 after scoring a mere seven points in the third quarter, but rallied in the final period for the second-consecutive night to emerge with a victory.
“The third quarter was just frustrating, where me missed 10 shots inside of five feet. What easily could have been a 15-point lead was a deficit heading into the fourth quarter,” Elma head coach Matt Ferrier said. “We kept our composure late, found the will to score and then delivered.”
Senior guard Cason Seaberg gave Elma the lead in the fourth quarter with a transition three then iced the game with a reverse layup on the break.
Elma went 19-for-51 from the field (37%) and was led by a trio of double-digit scorers in Traden Carter (14 points), AJ Holmes (13) and Seaberg (10).
“Dallas is the biggest school at this tournament. We did a great job on the defensive side of the ball. Holding that team to 45 points was incredible,” said Ferrier, whose team forced the Dragons (1-5) into multiple desperation shots deep in the shot clock. “We went to Oregon to get tested and boy did we. We easily could be coming home 0-3 but the boys said, ‘No way.’ We are learning to win tight games versus good competition. The growth, the camaraderie and team bonding from this trip is invaluable. We are coming back to Washington a better team.”
Elma hosts Aberdeen at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
Dallas 16 10 11 8 – 45
Elma 13 14 7 14 – 48
Scoring: Elma – Carter 14, Holmes 13, Seaberg 10, Studer 4, Vessey 4, McGaffey 3.
Toledo 72, Ocosta 41
Ocosta struggled to slow down the Toledo offense in a 72-41 loss on Saturday at Ocosta High School in Westport.
The Wildcats (3-6) stayed close to the Indians (6-2) through the first 10 minutes of the game, but Toledo began to pull away thanks to hot shooting and pounding the offensive glass.
Kayden Turner and Jesus Agramon scored 11 points apiece for a Wildcats squad that shot 30% on 14-of-46 from the field.
Noah Prigmore added seven points, five rebounds and four assists for Ocosta.
The Wildcats’ next scheduled game is at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, Jan. 3 at Forks High School.
