Hoquiam didn’t find much success against the 2B class’ No. 8 team as we review Monday’s prep basketball games on the Harbor.

BOYS PREP BASKETBALL

Ilwaco 73, Hoquiam 43

A tough shooting night combined with a lack of transition defense led to a 73-43 loss for Hoquiam against Ilwaco on Monday in Hoquiam.

The Grizzlies (7-8 overall) struggled from in close, hitting 11-of-36 shots from inside the 3-point line (30.5%).

The poor shooting combined with an inability to get back on defense led to the non-league loss, according to Grizzlies head coach Jeff Niemi.

“Early on, we missed lots of opportunities at the basket,” Niemi said. “I bet you (Ilwaco) converted about 70% of those misses into fast-break points. So we did not get back very well. It was a combination of transition defense being poor and poor finishing/”

Hoquiam trailed 22-10 after the first quarter and played catch up for most of the entirety of the evening against the Fishermen (13-3).

Hoquiam went 14 of 51 from the field (27%) and hit on 12-of-23 free throws (52%).

Ilwaco shot 25 of 43 (58%) from 2-point range, often converting a missed shot or one of 20 Hoquiam turnovers into fast-break points.

The Grizzlies were also outrebounded 43-35.

“They won on the glass, they won the turnover margin, they outshot us. They just beat us,” Niemi said. “They’re a really good team, credit to them.”

Hoquiam was led by Lincoln Niemi and Zander Jump with 15 and 13 points, respectively.

The Grizzlies take on Tenino in a key 1A Evergreen League matchup at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Hoquiam Square Garden.

Mossyrock 50, Willapa Valley 48

Willapa Valley’s bid for a big upset fell just short in a 50-48 loss to Mossyrock on Monday at Mossyrock High School.

According to Valley head coach Derek Rask, the Vikings (6-8, 5-3 1B Columbia Valley) lost the game by going 7 for 18 from the charity stripe (39%).

“We fought hard tonight. I believe we lost the game at the free-throw line,” he said. “We really struggle from there and it’s tough to win when you miss 11 in a tight game.”

Valley was led by Blaine King and Connor “Cheese” Keeton with 13 and 10 points, respectively, and were led by JB Russell on the glass with 11 rebounds.

Valley went 19 of 51 from the floor (37%) for the game while Mossyrock (8-6, 6-2) hit 20-of-58 shots (34%).

“I was really proud of our effort and energy this evening. We’ve struggled playing on the road this season, so we wanted to change that,” Rask said. “Mossyrock is a very good team in their gym, but I thought we executed well and gave ourselves an excellent chance to win.”

Willapa Valley hosts Three Rivers Christian in a league game at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Ocosta 36, Pe Ell 28

Ocosta outlasted Pe Ell for a 36-28 non-league victory on Monday at Pe Ell High School.

The Wildcats (5-11) shot 31% on 15-of-49 shooting, including 2 of 19 from the 3-point line (10.5%).

But Ocosta’s defense held Pe Ell to less than 10 points in each quarter of the game to pick up the win.

”Well, as the final score indicates, this was not a basketball game for those looking for high-flying offense,” Ocosta head coach Jason Quinby said. “Both teams committed many turnovers and missed a lot of shots. That being said, both teams struggled to find room against each other’s defense. We just happened to find a little more of an advantage inside.

Ocosta point guard Jesus Agramon led the Wildcats with a game-high 16 points to go along with nine rebounds.

The Wildcats host Forks in a 2B Pacific League game set for 7 p.m. on Thursday.

Lake Quinault 44, Mary M. Knight 40

Lake Quinault won for just the second time this season with a 44-40 victory over Mary M. Knight in a 1B Coastal League game on Monday at Lake Quinault High School.

The Elks (2-13, 2-4 1B Coastal) got a big game from freshman Colin Tiemeyer, who had a double-double with a game-high 22 points and 12 rebounds to go along with three blocked shots.

Senior Lewis Anderson added 10 points for an Elks team that shot 40% from the floor on 18-of-45 shooting.

With the win, the Elks sit in third place in the 1B Coastal League, a game behind Taholah in the win column.

Lake Quinault hosts Taholah at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday.

GIRLS PREP BASKETBALL

Ocosta 52, Hoquiam JV 19

Ocosta sophomore post Anna Davis had a triple-double in a 52-19 win over Hoquiam’s junior varsity team on Monday in Westport.

Davis scored a season-high 32 points, grabbed 18 rebounds and had 10 steals to lead the Wildcats to the victory.

Senior guard Brynn Rasmus had four assists while Gabby Ness added three assists and four rebounds for the Wildcats.

Ocosta freshman Elly Mirante had a season-high five steals in the game.

The Wildcats host Ilwaco at 6 p.m. on Wednesday.

Mossyrock 35, Willapa Valley 20

Willapa Valley is searching for answers after a 35-20 loss to Mossyrock on Monday in Menlo.

The Vikings (8-8, 5-3 1B Columbia Valley) managed just six points in the first half on 13 total shots, a stat Valley head coach Dawn Keeton said needs to change.

“We didn’t shoot enough,” she said. “We need to find out what we did right at the beginning of the season and get back to that.”

Valley had 26 turnovers as a team and went 7 for 27 from the field (26%).

Rilyn Channell led Valley with nine points.

The Vikings take on Three Rivers Christian at 5:30 p.m. on Tuesday at Willapa Valley High School.

Lake Quinault is still in search of its first win of the season afer a 54-10 loss to Mary M. Knight on Monday at Lake Quinault High School.

The Lady Elks (0-14, 0-5 1B Coastal) trailed 17-0 after one quarter and managed no more than five points in any period of the game.

All of Lake Quinault’s scoring was done by senior Marisol Valdez and eighth-grader Dezbra Sansom with five points apiece.

The Lady Elks host Taholah at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
