TENINO — Nearly hitting for the cycle, Matthew Plato drove in five runs as Montesano trounced Tenino in an Evergreen 1A League game Thursday at Tenino.

The Bulldogs did all their scoring in the first three innings following a 45-minute rain delay

Plato delivered a two-run double in the first inning, a run-scoring single in the second and a two-run homer in the third inning as the Bulldogs (6-2 overall) improved to 6-0 in league play.

Austin Peterson and Dakoyta Reninger combined to pitch a two-hitter.

“I thought Austin pitched a great game while pitching ahead in the counts and allowing our defense to make the plays behind him,” Monte coach Mike Osgood commented.

The Bulldogs visit Mark Morris for a non-leaguer today.

OCEAN SHORES — An eight-run sixth inning lifted Lake Quinault past North Beach in a non-league game Thursday at North Bay Park.

Eliceo Escobar’s two-run single in the sixth snapped a 7-7 standoff. Gabe Dominguez unloaded a two-run ground-rule double to center field later in the frame and the Elks (5-1) held off a late North Beach rally.

Tempers flared at times during a contest that included 13 hit batters.

“It was definitely a contentious game,” Lake Quinault coach Keith Samplawski acknowledged. “The difference for us is that (David) DeLaCruz and (Jesus) Mendoza, who are both eighth-graders, came in and threw strikes and finished the game.”

Dillon Pinnell doubled twice for North Beach (2-9)

Originally scheduled to visit Fort Vancouver’s C Squad, the Elks will instead face the Trappers’ varsity on Saturday at Vancouver. The Hyaks visit Ocosta for a doubleheader Tuesday.

Wildcats 17, Acorns 3

WESTPORT — Doing most of its scoring in the late innings, Ocosta thumped Oakville in a non-league game Thursday.

Originally scheduled for Oakville, the game was shifted to Dorland Park due to superior field conditions. Oakville remained the home team.

Mekenna Fletcher had four hits and Kaylee Barnum lacked only a double of hitting for the cycle to lead the Ocosta attack. Barnum’s solo homer in the fifth inning was her 14th of the season.

The Wildcats (14-1) surprisingly trailed 1-0 after two innings before blowing it open.

“(The Oakville pitcher) had her change-up working and we were swinging at a lot of high pitches. I think we were overanxious,” Wildcat coach Jason Barnum said. “We settled down and put our game plan into motion…we started hitting first pitches.”

The Wildcats host Ilwaco in a Pacific 2B League game Monday.

Hyaks sweep

OYEHUT — Hannah Avery drove in seven runs in each game as North Beach swept Ilwaco, 16-5 and 22-6, in a Pacific League doubleheader on Thursday at Oyehut.

Avery slugged two homers and Helen Garman also homered for the Hyaks in the opener. Tied at 5-all, the Hyaks erupted for 11 runs in the sixth.

Avery also homered and Letty Carcaise tripled twice and doubled for North Beach (4-1, 7-2) in the nightcap.

In addition to her hitting exploits, Avery was the winning pitcher in both games.

Hyak coach Frankie Pope cited Avery, Carcaise and Aaliyah Newton for their performances.

North Beach hosts South Bend on Monday.

BOYS SOCCER

Bobcats 3, Bearcats 0

CHEHALIS — Taking the lead in the game’s opening minute, Aberdeen blanked Chehalis in an Evergreen 2A League contest Thursday at Chehalis.

It took the league-leading Bobcats (6-1, 10-2) only 42 seconds to break the scoring ice. Senior midfielder Alejandro Felipe gained possession of a deflected cross from Tony Oropeza and beat the goalkeeper from six yards out.

Nine minutes later, Luis Martinez converted a pass from Cesar Corona.

Corona’s diving header, off a free kick from Oropeza that hit the crossbar, represented Aberdeen’s only second-half goal.

Senior goalkeeper Alexis Garcia preserved the shutout with a great save on a Bearcat breakaway early in the second half.

“We played a strong game defensively, won the ball with intensity and passed well enough on an unfamiliar (grass) surface,” AHS coach Larry Fleming said.

Defenders Robby Lewis, Trevor Dawkins, Anthony Churlin and Dylan Hughes the reserves Damon McCormick, Elias Jimenez and David Housden were credited with solid performances.

Chehalis took the JV contest, 3-1. Enrique Cuevas scored for the Bobcats, with Carlos Vasquez and Jerin Paris cited for fine play.

The Bobcats host league runner-up Black Hills on Tuesday.

Grizzlies 15, Beavers 1

Hoquiam needed just 21 seconds to score its first goal as the Grizzlies rolled to victory over Tenino on Thursday at Sea Breeze Oval.

Naz Mazariegos and Gregory Dick each posted hat tricks for the Grizzlies (3-1, 7-3) as Hoquiam cruised to victory. Mazariegos flicked a header back to Connor Darras just moments into the contest and Darras blasted a shot from the middle of the box past the Tenino keeper to give Hoquiam the lead for good.

Darras, Parker McCormick and Jose Juarez each added two goals in the contest, while Andy Garcia, Tigre Falla and Jordan Zapata each scored a goal.

“Our plan is always to get the upper hand on possession,” Hoquiam head coach Fidel Sanchez said. “Our guys did some good things today. Our focus was to find the open man, trust your teammate and get quality shots.”

Sanchez cited McCormick, Juarez and James Courneya for their performances.

Hoquiam hosts White Salmon on Saturday.

Eagles 2, Spartans 1

ELMA — An own goal proved to be the difference as Elma defeated Forks in an Evergreen 1A League match at Davis Field on Thursday.

Tied 1-1 in the 77th minute, Elma’s Trace Thompson played a ball into the box, which was knocked around before Christian DelaConcha rushed in to kick the ball on goal. The shot was deflected and as a Forks’ player tried to clear the ball, his kick hit the foot of a Spartan player and shot back into the goal for what would be the game-winner.

“It was a really nice win tonight,” Elma head coach Carson Seaberg said. “Our effort tonight was just awesome.”

Elma struck first in the 45th minute when Carlos Bautista played a corner kick perfectly to the far post for Trace Thompson to head the ball home.

Forks scored on a long ball through to Samuel Gomez.

Seaberg cited DelaConcha, Thompson, Bautista and Bastien Marseille.

Elma travels to Castle Rock today.

United 1, Bulldogs 0

MONTESANO — Julian Sanchez scored with five minutes remaining to give the Toledo-Winlock combine a non-league victory over Montesano on Thursday at Rottle Field.

Bulldog goalkeeper Waymn Thoemmes made a leaping save of a United shot in the 75th minute, but the visitors converted the rebound for the lone marker.

Following a scoreless first half, Monte coach Rick Denholm went to a three-defender alignment in the second half in an effort to increase his team’s scoring chances.

“We got exposed with that when we pushed some guys up,” Denholm said. “This was a non-league game and we were just experimenting so we could score some goals.”

Denholm cited the play of defenders Riccardo Marangon, Eric Blanchard, Kenny Moua and Hayden Klinger and the reserve play of Gage Iverson.

The Bulldogs host Elma on Tuesday.

GIRLS GOLF

Bulldogs 206, Eagles 340

ELMA — Led by Macey Wecker’s 45, Montesano overwhelmed Elma in a Southwest Washington 1A League match Thursday at Oaksridge G.C.

McKenna Miller added a 52 for the Bulldogs.

Alexis Cooper topped Elma with 71.

“Elma has a young team and we caught them on a bit of an off-day, as they were playing their third match in as many days and were a little worn out,” Monte coach Lloyd Aldrich said. “Our team score has been consistently in the low 200s, which is great. But with districts just over two weeks away, I wouldn’t mind seeing that score start to go down just a bit.”

Both East County teams will play separate matches against King’s Way Christian on Tuesday at Oaksridge.
