Montesano picked up a victory on the road while the Bulldogs boys and girls track teams swept a meet in Ilwaco on Thursday.

Montesano 8, Forks 4

Montesano’s long trip north wasn’t in vain as the Bulldogs defeated Forks 8-4 on Thursday in Forks.

Playing in just its second game of the season, Montesano (1-1 overall) took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first thanks to an RBI single off the bat of catcher Ali Parkin followed by a two-run double from first baseman Kylee Wisdom.

Monte would take a 4-1 lead when shortstop Addi Kersker scored on a fielder’s choice ground out from Wisdom in the fourth, but Forks (1-2) rallied back with a run in the bottom half of the frame and a pair of runs in the fifth – capped by a Fynlie Peters RBI double – to make it a 4-4 game heading into the final two innings.

The Bulldogs wasted no time in responding, regaining the lead when starting pitcher Riley Timmons laced a single into center field, scoring Grace Gooding and Kersker to put Monte up 6-4.

Monte would add some insurance runs in the top of the seventh when Carsyn Wintrip drove in a run with a double followed later by a Gooding two-out RBI single for an 8-4 lead.

That was all Timmons would need as the senior right-hander worked around a one-out walk to strike out the final two Spartans she faced, securing the Bulldogs victory.

Timmons allowed four runs – three earned – on five hits and eight walks with 13 strikeouts.

Monte’s offense came mostly from the middle of the lineup as the No. 4-7 spots in the lineup were a combined 8-for-15 (.533) with six runs scored and six RBI, led by Parkin’s 3-for-4 performance.

Montesano, Raymond top leaderboard at Ilwaco meet

Montesano and Raymond’s boys track and field teams finished No. 1 and 2, respectively, at a track and field meet on Thursday in Ilwaco.

Montesano scored 193 points to place first overall, with Raymond scoring 96 points to place second.

The Bulldogs got event wins from sophomore Ashton McKinney (200, 24.55); senior Jesse Anderson (400, 54.33; 1600, 4:58.59); sophomore Benny Anderson (800, 2:17.24); Jackson Green (3200, 12:00.14); senior Gabe Bodwell (javelin, 149-03); Caleb Bruland (long jump, 18-0 PR) and the 4×100-meter relay team (Isac Hawkins, Jerrell Bayless, McKinney, Mason Rasmussen, 46.85) and 4×400 relay team (Peyton Damasiewicz, Bayless, Pablo Moreno, Jesse Anderson, 3:59.69).

Raymond senior Austin Snodgrass won the 100 with a time of 11.71 and the shot put with a heave of 43 feet, one inch.

Snodgrass finished second in the discus with a mark of 138-6.5 less than a week after breaking Denny Freeman’s 50-year old school record with a personal-best of 159-9 at the Rainier Icebreaker.

Raymond’s Chris Banker continued his impressive start to the season, winning the high jump with a leap of 6-2, edging Montesano’s Gabe Bodwell by two inches.

Raymond’s Kevin Hovis earned a win in the triple jump with a mark of 34-10.

“We had some good results at Ilwaco this afternoon,” Raymond head coach Mike Tully said. “I’m really happy with how we’re looking at this point of the season.”

South Bend senior Robby Stigall had a strong showing in the throwing events, winning the discus (146-3) and placing second in the javelin (131-9).

Montesano also won the girls competition with 196 points, well ahead of Naselle (92) and South Bend (87.5), which placed second and third, respectively.

Bulldogs winners were junior Hailey McElroy (100, 13.49; 200, 29.31); freshman Haley Schweppe (400, 1:04.59 PR; 1600, 5:26.96 PR); junior Samantha Schweppe (3200, 12:33.55); junior Willow Valentine (shot put, 30-5); senior Liz York (discus, 90-2); senior Mikayla Stanfield (javelin, 101-8) and junior Alayna Olson (triple jump, 30-9).

South Bend was led by senior Mackenzie Kuiken with a victory in the 100-meter hurdles (18.24) and the victorious 4×100 relay team of Aoki Phimmasone, Olivia Milton, Avalyn Stigall and Kuiken (1:00.74).
