GHC’s Tamker places second at Simpson Invitational
Grays Harbor College men’s golfer Rasmus Tamker shot a 4-under par to place second at the NAIA Simpson University Invitational on Monday and Tuesday in Redding, California.
Tamker shot a 68 in Monday’s first 18-hole round followed by a 72 on Tuesday. Tamker’s final score of 140 was good enough for a second-place finish on the leaderboard.
Tamker led the event after his first-round low score of 68 on Monday, which included five birdies with just one bogey.
Cole Wasson placed eight overall with a total of 145 (71-74) followed by brother Brett Wasson (76-84, 160) in 43rd and Hayden Hayes (84-81, 165) in 61st as the Chokers placed seventh in the team standings out of 10 colleges.
“Great experience for the Chokers linksmen with everyone headed on right path,” said Chokers head coach Ann Swanson, whose team was the first and only junior college team to be invited to the event.
Simpson University’s Dean Sharp won the individual title with Southern Oregon University taking the team trophy.
GHC competes at the Seattle University Redhawk Invitational on Monday and Tuesday at Chambers Bay in University Place.
BOYS PREP SOCCER
Aberdeen 3, Shelton 1
Aberdeen played a sound game in a 3-1 victory over Shelton on Tuesday at Stewart Field in Aberdeen.
The Bobcats (3-4, 2-3 2A Evergreen) and Highclimbers (2-4-1, 1-4) both had periods of possession into the attacking half of the pitch, but it was Aberdeen’s effectiveness in the final third that turned out to be the difference.
Aberdeen broke the scoreless tie when junior forward Evan Cone scored on a putback after a shot by senior forward Elmer Torres was blocked in the 33rd minute.
The Bobcats made it 2-0 when senior winger Freddy Hernandez sent a cross toward senior forward Ruben Oropeza, who headed it past the Shelton keeper from 5-yards with a minute to go in the first half.
In the second half, Aberdeen peppered the Shelton goal with shots and was rewarded when Cone scored his second of the game off an assist from junior midfielder Leo Garcia in the 63rd minute.
Shelton scored a garbage-time goal late in the game as Aberdeen earned a key 2A Evergreen Conference win.
“Our boys showed a ton of hustle and aggression but gave up the ball a little too easily with some bad touches,” Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming said. “Regardless, we were able to get some great looks and actually finish a few this game, which was a relief.”
Aberdeen’s Juan Serrano and Hernandez “were both very good at midfield,” according to Fleming, who added the Oropeza “was excellent coming off the bench tonight.”
Aberdeen takes on Centralia at 7 p.m. on Friday in Centralia.
