North Beach proved it is still the team to beat in the 2B Pacific League while Aberdeen competed in its league-championship meet as we review late-season track and field meets on the Harbor.
North Beach sweeps team league championships
The North Beach boys and girls track and field teams won their third respective titles at the 2B Pacific League Sub-District Meet on Friday in Raymond.
Led by Elton Rockey, who swept the hurdles races, the Hyaks boys scored 210 points to beat Ilwaco and Raymond, who tied for second with 92 points apiece.
The North Beach girls were led by Elka Cox, who won both the 100 and 300-meter hurdles to lead the Hyaks to 193 points, well ahead of second-place Forks (146).
“At the beginning of the season, I asked the team what team goals they had for the season, and the overwhelming majority said they wanted ‘the three-peat.’” North Beach head coach Peter Fry said. “So, we went after it. This accomplishment is a reflection of the expectation that has been established in the program. We’re all very proud to be Hyaks.”
Raymond was led by senior Austin Snodgrass, who cruised to a win in the boys 100 and won the shot put on his final throw.
Seagulls head coach Mike Tully said several of his student-athletes came up big on Friday, with multiple personal-records and clutch performances on final attempts.
“There were a lot of PRs in the sprints and jumps especially. We were able to advance quite a few kids, which is the key at this time of year,” Tully said. “I’m proud of how our kids competed and I’m looking to see what we can do at districts.”
The 2B District 4 Championships are scheduled to start at 3 p.m. on Friday at W.F. West High School in Chehalis.
