Quarterfinals

Toledo 1, Ocosta 0

Ocosta’s reign as 2B District 4 champions ended with a 1-0 extra-inning loss to Toledo in a district-quarterfinal game on Wednesday in Centralia.

The Wildcats (15-7 overall) and Riverhawks (18-3) were locked in a pitcher’s dual as Ocosta ace Jessie Gilbert and Toledo freshman Peyton Holter held opposing offenses scoreless through eight-and-a-half innings.

With the extra-inning runner Quyn Norberg placed on second base, a bunt out and pop out head Ocosta one out away from escaping the inning.

But Norberg stole third then came in to score on a passed ball, ending the game and spoiling another dominant district-playoff outing by Gilbert.

The Wildcats right-hander allowed one unearned run on one hit and two walks with 19 strikeouts. Gilbert carried a no-hitter with one out in the eighth before Taysia Miller reached on a bunt base hit.

Noel Cuzdey led Ocosta with two hits in the game.

Jessie Gilbert threw a no-hitter and Joanah Rosander hit two home runs as Ocosta defeated Ilwaco 11-0 in a 2B District 4 elimination game on Wednesday in Centralia.

The Wildcats (16-7) got on the board when Rosander led off the top of the second inning with a no-doubt home run to center field.

Leading 3-0 in the fifth, Rosander blasted a shot over the left-field fence for a three-run home run, staking Ocosta to a 6-0 lead.

Gilbert homered with two on and no outs in the sixth for an 11-0 lead.

That was more than enough run-support for Gilbert as the Loyola Marymount-bound pitcher no-hit the Fishermen (10-10), allowing just two walks while striking out 14.

Ocosta had eight extra-base hits in the game.

The Wildcats face Onalaska in a district-elimination game at 10 a.m. on Saturday.

One clutch home run deserved another in Pe Ell-Willapa Valley’s 6-4 win over Raymond-South Bend in a 2B District 4 elimination game on Wednesday in Centralia.

In a close, well-fought match, the Ravens (9-8) led 1-0 after a run in the bottom of the third when Jordynn Sedy raced home to score on a Kyndal Koski bunt.

RSB doubled the lead when catcher Ava Pine bunted in center fielder Emma Glazier – on base with a leadoff triple – for a 2-0 lead in the fourth.

PWV took the lead with four in the fifth, highlighted by a Tylar Keeton two-run double.

RSB added another run in the bottom of the fifth when Berklee Morley drove in Kyndal Koski with a sacrifice bunt.

The Ravens tied the game when Pine led off the sixth with a solo home run to center field.

But PWV responded an inning later when Karli Phelps sent the first pitch she saw over the center field fence for a clutch leadoff home run as the Titans regained the lead 5-4.

“Today, I didn’t hit the greatest. I had three strikeouts in the first game,” Phelps admitted, who said her approach was to hit something back up the middle and make sure she rotated her hips. “I was thinking down the middle and it was inside middle. By the time I got to first I knew it was out. It was pretty good. It felt pretty nice.”

“She struggled in the first game and was thinking she was having a terrible day, but that kid never quits,” PWV head coach Eric Hopfer said of Phelps. “She pushes through and she’s never going to give up.”

With one on and two outs later in the inning, CJ Sipp doubled to center field, scoring Bella Ruddell for a 6-4 lead.

Sophomore relief pitcher Eliza Barnum retired the Ravens in order in the seventh to end the game, and RSB’s season.

“They played incredible,” RSB head coach Dakota Fluke, a former PWV alum, said of her team’s tough draw of facing two of the top 2B programs in the state. “I’m not disapointed with those games. They did good. … Definitely not disapointed in the way they played. They played with heart and grit and it was good to see they understand they can compete with all these teams.”

“I think the girls just needed to keep pushing forward and make it all about the next play, and they did that,” Hopfer said. “There was definitely added pressure (playing in an elimination game) and the girls were pretty nervous today. … Since the Titans have been Titans, we’ve always gone to state. Especially losing that first game when they didn’t think they should have, it put pressure on this game to where they said, ‘Now we’ve really got do to it.’ They kind of dug themselves a whole but they got out of it.”

PWV takes on Toledo in an elimination game at 10 a.m. on Saturday in Centralia.
