Ocosta edged Pe Ell-Willapa Valley in a 2-0 pitcher’s dual in the 2B District 4 Tournament’s third/fourth-place game on Saturday in Centralia.

Ocosta junior starter Jessie Gilbert and PWV senior hurler Lauren Emery dazzled opposing offenses for the majority of the game.

Gilbert put Ocosta (18-7) up 1-0 with a two-out solo home run in the first inning.

The best chance for PWV (18-6) to score came in the bottom of the fourth inning when sophomore outfielder Lauren Matlock led off with a triple.

Matlock was held up at third on a bunt out by Jillian Hodel and remained there when Karli Phelps reached on a bunt single and advanced to second as Ocosta wouldn’t take the bait.

Gilbert then struck out Tylar Keeton and Sophia Milanowski to end the inning.

Ocosta added a run in the seventh when Gilbert reached via an intentional walk and scored on a Zaida Morales fielder’s choice ground ball.

Phelps led off the bottom of the seventh with a double, but was later ruled out trying to advance to third.

With one out to go, Gilbert struck out Milanowski to end the game.

Gilbert allowed six hits without a walk and struck out 14 in seven shutout innings.

Emery took the loss, allowing two earned runs on eight hits with four walks and 11 strikeouts in seven innings pitched.

Both teams advanced to the 2B District 4 State Tournament with wins earlier in the day.

Consolation games

Ocosta 2, Onalaska 0

Ocosta earned a trip to the state tournament with a 2-0 win over Onalaska in a 2B District 4 Tournament consolation-bracket game on Saturday in Centralia.

The Wildcats and Loggers (15-10) were locked in a scoreless tie until third baseman Zaida Morales came up clutch, driving in two runs with a double to give Ocosta the lead.

Wildcats star pitcher Jessie Gilbert did the rest, holding Onalaska scoreless on four hits and a walk while striking out 17 to earn the complete-game victory and send Ocosta to the state tournament.

“It was really just my team, they had my back from the first hit of the game,” Gilbert said. “Zaida (Morales), she was ready to go and I couldn’t be more proud of her. Our whole field was ready. … It was a whole team win and that’s what.”

After reaching the state semifinals last season, Gilbert said the Wildcats have their eyes on an even better trophy this year.

“We are happy with what we got here at districts, but our next focus it state and taking first,” she said.

Ocosta enters the 2B State Tournament as the No. 7 seed and will face No. 10 Toledo at 10 a.m. on Friday at the Gateway Sports Complex in Yakima.

Pe Ell-Willapa Valley 11, Toledo 6

Trailing by a run late in the game, Pe Ell-Willapa Valley advanced to the state tournament with a thrilling 11-6 win over Toledo in a 2B District 4 consolation-bracket game on Saturday in Centralia.

A Titans error in the top of the sixth inning broke a 5-5 tie and gave Toledo (19-6) a 6-5 lead.

But in the bottom of the sixth, PWV turned the game on its proverbial ear.

Addison Merkel immediately tied the game with a leadoff home run on the first pitch of the frame.

Later in the inning, freshman outfielder Karli Phelps singled to drive in sophomore Jillian Hodel to put PWV up 7-6.

Back-to-back doubled by Tylar Keeton and Milanowski extended the lead to 10-6 with a CJ Sipp run-scoring single staking PWV to an 11-6 lead.

When the dust settled, the Titans scored six runs in the inning on six hits and a walk.

Senior pitcher Lauren Emery retired the side in order in the seventh to complete the victory and sent the Titans back to the state tournament.

“It means a lot to me, honestly,” Emery said of the state-tournament berth. “I didn’t know if we would pull it together, but we went out and showed today how good we can be. I’m just happy we get to go (to state) my senior year because I was a little bit nervous, but now I’m excited.”

The Titans enter the state tournament as the No. 8 seed and will face No. 9 Northwest Christian (Colbert) in a first-round game set for 10 a.m. on Friday at the Gateway Sports Complex in Yakima.
