At least five railcars on a Puget Sound and Pacific train derailed several miles east of Oakville early Monday morning.

The cars, carrying soybeans, rolled into a ravine next to the track. Crews were onsite to begin righting the cars that afternoon.

An investigation into the cause of the derailment is underway, said Tom Ciuba, vice president of communications for PSAP’s parent company, Genesee & Wyoming Inc., in an email, but there is no conclusive root cause yet.

“The rest of the train was moved offsite, and the affected cars are in the process of being rerailed and assessed for damage,” Ciuba said. “As a result, our main line is out of service, expected to reopen (Wednesday).”

As the train was carrying soybeans, there is no hazardous materials risk, Ciuba said.

PSAP engineering teams regularly inspect their rails and replace components that require remedial action, Ciuba said.
