Prep Volleyball Roundup: Montesano cruises past W.F. West

Montesano rolled over W.F. West while Aberdeen and Hoquiam also picked up wins as we review Twin Harbors prep volleyball games.

Montesano 3, W.F. West 0

Montesano was dominant in a straight-set victory over W.F. West on Monday in Montesano.

The Bulldogs (4-2 overall) beat the Bearcats (2-5) by scores of 25-14, 25-7 and 25-17.

Monte was led by standout senior setter Karissa Otterstetter, who had a massive game with 14 kills, 18 digs, 22 assists and two blocks to go along with a perfect 14 for 14 night from the service line.

Otterstetter wasn’t the only Bulldog to fill up the stat sheet on Monday as senior middle blocker Kylee Wisdom matched Otterstetter with a 14 for 14 service game while recording 10 kills and eight digs while outside hitter Kaila Hatton had a double-double with 12 kills and 20 digs.

Montesano sophomore setter Makena Blancas led the Bulldogs by going 16 for 16 at the service line to go along with 12 assists while Grace Gooding added 14 digs for Monte.

“The girls played well tonight and hit the ball hard. I was able to get all of my freshmen in for some playing time which was good,” Montesano head coach Cindy Wecker said. “The girls served very well with only one missed serve in the match.”

The Bulldogs’ win came two days after suffering a bitter loss to Cedar Park Christian on Saturday in Montesano.

In that match, Monte took the first two sets 25-23 and 25-22 before falling in three straight 25-21, 25-13 and 16-14 to lose for the second time this season.

Monte takes on Raymond-South Bend in a non-league contest scheduled for 7 p.m. Wednesday at Raymond High School.

Aberdeen 3, Rochester 2

Aberdeen rallied to win the final three sets in a 3-2 win over Rochester on Monday at Sam Benn Gym in Aberdeen.

The Bobcats (2-2) fell behind 2-0 after dropping the first two games 25-18 and 25-21.

But Aberdeen rallied to tie the game with wins in games three (25-10) and four (25-11) and won the decisive fifth set 15-13.

“Our serve receive was shaky the first two sets and hits were going long. After the second set we cleaned up our passes and sped up our offense, placing the ball smartly on the court with smartly-placed tips and attacks,” Aberdeen head coach Desiree Glanz said. “We got our momentum back and decided to stay in the match. The girls showed amazing fight and nonstop encouragement and belief in themselves and each other.”

Aberdeen was led by setter Mia Hallak, who had a breakout game with a season-high 42 assists to go along with 12 digs.

Outside hitter Hadley Lowery had 15 kills while Lilly Camp added 12 kills and six aces for Aberdeen.

Bobcats Libero Sophie Knutson had 17 digs and five aces in the match.

Glanz said Aberdeen’s comeback win was due in part to a more positive team mindset.

”We are working on our fight positivity and staying up even when we are down,” she said. “Super proud of this team tonight.”

Aberdeen competes at the Mark Morris tournament on Saturday at Mark Morris High School.

Hoquiam 3, Ilwaco 2

Hoquiam needed less than an hour to dispatch of Ilwaco with a 3-2 victory on Monday at Ilwaco High School.

The Grizzlies (4-1) won 25-12, 25-13 and 25-5 paced by a steady service game and a top performance from setter Katlyn Brodhead (21-21 service, 5 aces, 22 assists).

“Our goal tonight was to serve tough and be more consistent, which I think we accomplished,” Hoquiam head coach Heather Bozich said. “I thought we did a really good job keeping our energy level high and communicating throughout the entire match.”

Hoquiam was coming off a solid performance at the North Beach Tournament on Saturday.

The Grizzlies defeated Neah Bay in the semifinals and faced Onalaska in the finals, beating the Loggers 25-18 and 27-25, battling back from down six to win the second set.

Throughout four pool-play matches and the playoff bracket, Hoquiam never lost a set en route to placing first at the tourney.

“The biggest part of this weekend was their determination not to lose,” Bozich said. “We didn’t lose a set the whole tourney as it was pure grit that got us the trophy.”

Hoquiam plays at Forks at 7:15 p.m. on Tuesday.
