Montesano 35, Napavine 19

Montesano earned a signature win over one of the state’s outstanding small-school programs, pulling away from Napavine for a 35-19 victory on Friday at Jack Rottle Field in Montesano.

The Bulldogs (2-2 overall) found themselves in a back-and-forth battle against the Tigers (2-2), which have reached the 2B class state final each of the past three seasons, winning twice.

Montesano got on the scoreboard first when quarterback Tyson Perry hit tight end Marcus Hale for a 38-yard touchdown at the 2:42 mark of the first quarter.

Early in the second quarter, the Tigers tied the game at 7-7 when Beckett Landram hauled in a 31-yard touchdown pass from quarterback Grady Wilson.

Napavine took a 13-6 lead when Wilson threw for his second touchdown of the game, connecting with receiver Travis Kirkpatrick with 48 seconds left in the first half.

But a good kickoff return put the Bulldogs in great field position and the offense cashed in when junior quarterback Tyson Perry threw a strike to receiver Toren Crites for a 45-yard touchdown to take a 14-13 lead into halftime.

Monte extended the lead to 21-13 when running back Terek Gunter capped a drive with a 4-yard touchdown run in the third quarter.

Monte’s running game continued to pay dividends down the stretch when Gunter crossed the goal line on a 7-yard run to go up 28-13 early in the final period.

In showing the quality of its program, Napavine wouldn’t go away. The Tigers stayed in the game when Wilson scored on a 4-yard run, with a failed two-point conversion keeping the score at 28-19.

The Bulldogs went back to the run game to put the game away, capping its fifth scoring drive of the night when Crites ran it in from a yard out with 1:37 to play.

“I really have to give my coaching staff some kudos. They did a good job. They are working so hard this year getting our kids ready to play,” Montesano head coach Terry Jensen said. “I’m just real proud of our kids and how hard they competed tonight against a real quality football program.”

Montesano managed just 16 plays and 59 rushing yards in a first half where time of possession was dominated by Napavine.

The Bulldogs flipped the script in the third quarter, rushing for 138 yards on 17 carries and finishing the game with 364 yards, 255 of those on the ground.

Gunter led Monte with 105 yards on 16 carries while senior running back Gabe Pyhala added 73 yards for the Bulldogs.

That was good news for Jensen, who has been working toward his offense regaining its identity as an effective running team.

“We did a better job (of playing Monte football), especially in second half,” he said. “I think we kind of wore them down a little bit. We were able to rush the ball a little more in the second half. It was by far and away our best rushing game of the season. … It’s a great win against a great program.”

Monte’s defense held Napavine to less than 20 points for the first time this season and forced two turnovers in the game while holding the Tigers to 37 rushing yards in the second half.

Lineman Kyla Caton, who Jensen commended for not missing a snap in what was an ironman effort, recovered a fumble while Crites added an interception for Monte.

Pyhala and senior lineman Shaun Straka had a sack apiece for the Bulldogs.

Monte takes on Tenino in a 1A Evergreen League opener at 7 p.m. Friday in Tenino.

King’s 47, Elma 15

Things went sideways for Elma early on in a 47-15 loss to King’s on Friday in Seattle.

Elma (2-2) fumbled inside its own 10-yard line in the game’s first drive, leading to an early Knights touchdown.

On their next possession, a bad snap sailed over punter Blaize Salazar’s head, giving King’s excellent field position inside the Elma territory.

A few plays later, Knights quarterback Cole Adams connected with Jack Fuller for a 37-yard touchdown and a 14-0 lead.

After Elma’s third drive stalled out at their own 30, another bad snap on a punt attempt gave King’s the ball at the Elma 3-yard line. Two plays later, Braeden Caulk ran it in to put Elma in an early 21-0 hole.

“It was a really bad start to the game,” Elma head coach Larry Raynes said. “We kind of spotted them 21 points real quick and were struggling everywhere. … They kind of got us on our heels a little bit.”

Elma’s fortunes didn’t change for the better in the second quarter when Fuller scored on a pass from Adams to take a 27-0 lead.

Elma put together its best drive of the game on the ensuing possession, driving 66 yards on six play and scoring when running back Kolby Rademacher scored on a 2-yard run.

But King’s would score twice more before halftime, helped by recovering an onside kick in the process, to take a commanding 47-7 lead at the break.

Elma added a touchdown when quarterback Isaac McGaffey hit receiver Ethan Camus with a 1-yard pass in the fourth quarter. A two-point conversion run by Bo Muller rounded out the final score at 47-15.

McGaffey finished the game going 16 of 24 for 166 yards with a touchdown and an interception to lead the Eagles.

Elma was outgained 301-240 and went 3 for 16 (18.8%) on third-down conversions.

The Eagles host Rochester at 7 p.m. on Friday at Davis Field in Elma.
