Prep Roundup: Montesano’s Potts, Butterfield score hat tricks in win over Hoquiam

GIRLS PREP SOCCER

Montesano 9, Hoquiam 0

Montesano took care of business by blanking Hoquiam 9-0 in a 1A Evergreen League game on Monday at Montesano High School.

The Bulldogs (5-3 overall, 2-0 1A Evergreen) dominated from the opening whistle when senior forward Adda Potts scored a goal just 35 seconds into the game.

Sophomore forward Jaelyn Butterfield would score on a feed from senior midfielder Hazel Jones 13 minutes into the game with Potts closing out the first half with a goal in the 18th minute.

Monte continued to pour it on in the second half against the Grizzlies (2-6, 0-1).

Bulldogs senior midfielder Sam Roundtree scored four minutes after the break off an assist from freshman midfielder Lainey Robinson followed by a goal by junior defender Mary Campbell four minutes later, putting Monte up 5-0.

Potts then assisted on Butterfield’s second goal of the game in the 52nd minute with Butterfield returning the favor 10 minutes later, feeding Potts for her third goal of the game to record a hat trick.

Butterfield wasn’t done, recording a hat trick of her own with a goal in the 75th minute.

Jones scored a goal in the 78th minute to complete the 9-0 shutout.

Hoquiam head coach Corri Schmid said she was proud her young team that includes several eighth-graders never stopped playing.

“The girls never gave up and maintained a positive attitude,” Schmid said, commending the hustle of forward Taylor Pettit. “As a coach, that’s all I can ask for.”

Monte takes on University Prep in a non-league contest scheduled for 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday at Shoreline Center Park.

Hoquiam hosts Tenino for a league matchup at 6 p.m. on Thursday at Olympic Stadium.

Ocosta 10, Ilwaco 0

Ocosta scored 10 goals on Monday, but it was the first that will have lasting significance.

When the Wildcats took the field against the Ilwaco Fishermen on Monday in Ilwaco, Ocosta senior midfielder Kylee Denny was one assist away from breaking the school record.

She didn’t have to wait long to make history.

Denny sent a through ball past the Ilwaco defense to the foot of freshman phenom Bristol Towle, who scored in the second minute of the game, giving Ocosta the early lead and Denny the school’s all-time career assist lead with 39.

Ocosta (5-0-1, 1-0 2B Central) would go on to score nine more times while goal keeper Penny Park earned her first career shutout in a 10-0 win.

Towle would go on to score five goals in the game – three in the first half – as the Wildcats had five different goal-scorers in the game.

Freshman forward Lili Saunders scored two second-half goals, both on assists from junior midfielder Brizeyda Ayala Rios, while sophomore defender Katriya Nersten, sophomore midfielder Scarlett Nelson and Denny added a goal apiece in the rout.

”Our passing was phenomenal tonight. I have been challenging the team to utilize the entire field for good transition throughout the game and they have been improving on that each time they step on the field,” Ocosta head coach Rissy Ness said. “Not one girl goes without doing their part when they step on the field. They all work so hard and so well together. I am just so proud of them as a team and each individually as well.”

Ocosta is ranked second in the WIAA RPI 2B class rankings and faces Toledo at 6 p.m. on Tuesday at Toledo High School.

Ocosta 3, Taholah 2

Ocosta rallied on more than one occasion to pick up a key 3-2 victory over Taholah on Monday at Taholah High School.

In a battle of the top two teams in the 1B Coastal League, top-ranked Taholah (5-1, 5-1 1B Coastal) took advantage of a slow start by Ocosta (6-1, 5-0) to win the first set 25-17.

But Ocosta rallied to win sets two and three 25-18 and 25-21 before being edged out by the Chitwhins 25-20 in Game 4, setting up a fifth and final set.

Ocosta trailed by as much as five points in Game 5 before rallying to win the set 15-12, and the match 3-2.

“I am absolutely ecstatic with the way my team played in sets 2-5. We struggled getting our bearings in Set 1. We made a few adjustments go our serve receive and our serving strategy and it paid off,” Ocosta head coach Erin Snider said.

Jolissa Schlegel had what Snider said was a “dominant” performance at the net with 10 blocks (8 solo, 2 assisted) to go along with 10 kills and 11 digs.

“Her leadership on the court tonight kept our team with an eye on the prize,” Snider said. “We were down five points in Set 5, we reset our focus and finished out with smart offensive choices. … A great game versus a talented Taholah team.”

Ocosta plays at Mary M. Knight at 7 p.m. Tuesday.

Taholah takes on Wishkah at 7 p.m. at Wishkah Valley High School.

BOYS PREP GOLF

Elma 171, Tenino 211

Elma’s deep lineup proved its worth with a 171-211 win over Tenino on Monday at Oaksridge Golf Course in Elma.

Led by senior Brody Palmer’s low-round Medalist of the Match performance of 40, Elma emerged victorious on a day where arguably their best golfer, Robby Allen, shot a 47 yet still missed making the Eagles scoreboard.

“From what felt like an interestingly slow day on the course, our team put together one of their better rounds on the season,” Elma head coach Collin McMaster said. “The middle of the lineup really took care of business today. … It’s getting late in the season now, so time to iron out a few small things with only a few matches left on the schedule.”

Elma’s top four was rounded out by Trey Yeager, who birdied the par-3 fourth hole to shoot a 43, Luke Schneider (43) and TJ Dunlap (45).

Elma takes on Aberdeen at 3:30 p.m. on Friday at Oaksridge.
