GIRLS PREP SOCCER

University Prep 5, Montesano 0

Montesano found little success in a 5-0 loss to University Prep on Wednesday at Shoreline Center Park in Shoreline.

The Bulldogs (5-4 overall) were under pressure early and fell behind 1-0 after the Pumas (3-2-2) scored a goal nine minutes into the game.

University Prep scored again in the 23rd minute to take a 2-0 lead into halftime.

Monte’s fortunes didn’t change after the break as the Bulldogs fell behind 4-0 on Pumas goals in the 49th minute and 50th minutes.

University Prep capped off the scoring with a goal in the 65th minute.

Monte faced a barrage of offensive pressure from the Pumas as Bulldogs goal keeper Izzie Taylor made 14 saves in the loss.

“We’ve got to compete. I don’t think we showed up to compete,” Bulldogs head coach Fidel Sanchez said. “We did not compete to our level of expectation. We’re not hitting those marks right now.”

Monte was without several key players, including starters Lex Stanfield and Maycee Sanchez, but Coach Sanchez was not about to make injuries the excuse for the loss.

“We’re not 100% full yet … We have players that are banged up and are not playing their best because they are hurt,” he said. “But we’ve got to make it work. … We’ve got to play smarter, cleaner and tougher. We’ve got to be more aggressive. We are allowing to much space into our defensive third and we are no defending properly. We’re not winning the ball enough, we’re not keeping the ball long enough against the teams that are at the top in the state.”

Monte will have little time to think about the loss as the Bulldogs take on Rochester for a 1A Evergreen League game at 6 p.m. on Thursday at Rochester High School.

Toledo 2, Ocosta 1

Ocosta lost for the first time this season 2-1 to Toledo on Wednesday at Toledo High School.

The Wildcats (5-1-1, 1-1 2B Central) surrendered goals on the 10th and 34th minutes to trail 2-0 in the first half.

In the 40th minute, midfielder Kylee Denny hit a perfect 45-yard shot off a free kick that sailed over the Toledo keeper’s head for a goal to cut the deficit in half.

But Ocosta was unable to net the equalizer in suffering the 2B Central League loss.

“We made an adjustment on defense to get a little more speed in the backfield and it paid off, holding Toledo to just the two goal, but unfortunately, we weren’t able to add on to our our score in the second half of the game,” Ocosta head coach Rissy Ness said. “Our Lady Wildcats will continue to grind and learn from this experience. I have all the confidence that we can make some adjustments and come out even stronger against our next opponent.”

Ocosta takes on Auburn Adventist at 6 p.m. on Thursday in Westport.
