Elma 12, Hoquiam 0

Dynamic Elma scorer Beta Valentine hit a milestone in the Eagles’ 12-0 win over Hoquiam on Tuesday at Olympic Stadium in Hoquiam.

With her fourth goal of the game off an assist from younger sister Zippy in the 39th minute, Beta Valentine recorded the 100th goal of her outstanding prep career.

“A hundred (goals) is hard,” Elma head coach and Beta’s father, Evan Valentine said. “You’ve got to score multiple goals in all seasons. It’s really tough. She’s exactly at 100 right now and that’s pretty cool.”

Unofficially, Beta Valentine is now just four goals shy of tying the all-time school record of 104 goals set by Russell Jones, who led Elma’s boys team to a state runner-up finish in 2002, a team that also featured head coach Evan Valentine.

Led by Beta Valentine, the Eagles (4-4-2 overall, 3-0 1A Evergreen) had a huge first half with nine goals.

Beta Valentine scored four of those goals while assisting on four others. Her landmark 100th goal came with a minute left in the first half when she pounced on a rebound off a Zippy Valentine shot.

Beta Valentine wasn’t the only Eagle to fill the state sheet on Tuesday as senior midfielders Mia Monroe and Miley Seaberg also had major offensive contributions.

Monroe had a hat trick with three first-half goals while Seaberg had a goal and four assists in the game.

Leading 9-0, Elma subbed in multiple reserves in the second half, with freshman midfielder Makayla Roberts earning her first varsity goal with fellow freshman Zippy Valentine and sophomore midfielder Kenna Monroe also recording second-half goals.

Hoquiam (2-8, 0-3) was led by goal keeper Emily Brodhead with 21 saves in the one-sided match.

“We were not mentally ready when we stepped on the field tonight. The first half was rough,” Hoquiam head coach Corri Schmid said. “With that, I’m proud of the team for playing hard in the second half. It’s not easy to come out and keep playing with a score like that. We kept our heads up and were good sports.”

“The Hoquiam girls played hard. I saw lots of smiles on the field, so that was good,” Coach Valentine said. “Under the circumstances, I thought they had a good attitude. That was good to see.”

The Grizzlies play at Rochester at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

Elma has a key league matchup against Montesano at 7 p.m. on Thursday in Montesano.

Aberdeen 1, Shelton 0

Aberdeen picked up its first league win of the season with a 1-0 victory over Shelton on Tuesday in Shelton.

The Bobcats (4-5-2, 1-3 2A Evergreen Conference) kept themselves in playoff contention when Scotlyn Lecomte scored a goal late in the game to down the Highclimbers (2-6, 0-4).

After a scoreless first half that saw several Aberdeen chances sail over the crossbar, the Cats exhibited better ball movement that saw the Cats playing the majority of the second half in the Shelton half of the field.

Aberdeen would break through for a goal with just five minutes left in the game when the senior Lecomte, who had just moved up to forward from a midfield position, took a feed from fellow senior Miley Anderson, got around a Shelton defender and raced 50 yards to slot the ball inside the near post from 15 yards out for the game’s only goal.

“We can definitely finish cleaner, but we created many attempts and limited Shelton to very little in the way of scoring chances,” Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming said.

Fleming commended the play of Bobcats goal keeper Anni Devine, who earned a clean sheet with the shutout, and senior midfielder Delaney Shoemaker and defender Alyssa Yakovich.

Aberdeen’s JV team lost 2-1 on Tuesday.

Val Aguilar scored the lone goal for the Bobcats.

Aberdeen is tied for fourth place in the league with Black Hills and will face the Wolves at 7 p.m. on Thursday in Aberdeen.
