Aberdeen sweeps home league meet

Aberdeen High School’s boys and girls cross country teams swept their respective races at a 2A Evergreen Conference league meet on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at Makarenko Park in Cosmopolis.

Hosting both Tumwater and W.F. West in the meet, Aberdeen placed first atop the standings in the boys and girls team competitions, led by winners Henry Nelson and Ailyn Haggard.

Nelson, a senior, won the boys race with a time of 17:01.38, finishing nearly a full half-minute ahead of freshman teammate and runner-up Cecil Gumaelius (17:29.44).

Bobcats seniors Jacob Hallak (18:26.60, 4th), freshman Toby Nelson (19:07.00, 8th) and junior Ezekiel Olson (19:07.96, 10th) rounded out Aberdeen’s top five.

The Bobcats finished with 25 points, the lowest score of the round, to beat second-place Tumwater (45) by 20 points.

W.F. West place third with 52 points.

In the girls race, Bobcats sophomore Haggard cruised to a first-place finish with a time of 19:58.07, the only sub-20 minute time of the race.

Aberdeen took first overall with a final score of 23 to W.F. West’s 34.

Haggard was joined on the Cats’ team score by sophomore Serenity Allread (24:55.18, 6th), senior Anica Reimer (26:40.33, 8th) and freshman Taylor Hatton (26:55.09, 9th).

BOYS PREP GOLF

Elma 180, Hoquiam 218

Elma defeated Hoquiam 180-218 on Friday at the Highland Golf Course in Cosmopolis.

Playing on the front nine, the Eagles were led by T.J. Dunlap, who earned Medalist of the Match honors with a low round of 43.

Teammates Robby Allen (44), Luke Schneider (45) and Brody Palmer (48) rounded out Elma’s top four golfers.

Hoquiam was led by Ethan McLucas with a 51.

TraeJon Johnson (52), Daymond Cole (54) and Noah Taylor (61) each contributed to the Grizzlies’ final score.

Elma (180) – Dunlap 43, Allen 44, Schneider 45, Palmer 48.

Hoquiam (218) – McLucas 51, Johnson 52, Day. Cole 54, Taylor 61.

GIRLS PREP SWIMMING

Aberdeen 126, Tumwater 49

Aberdeen won nine of 12 events against Tumwater on Wednesday, Oct. 9 at the Grays Harbor YMCA in Hoquiam.

Aberdeen was led by seniors Mija Hood and Emma Mullins, each with two individual event wins in the meet.

“This was a strong, competitive meet for Aberdeen. There were some big time drops and several strong swims amongst the girls,” Aberdeen head coach Anne Eisele said. “Tumwater is a small team, but they have a great group of girls and they were very competitive.”

Aberdeen will host Shelton at 3:30 p.m. on Wednesday at the YMCA in Hoquiam.
