Elma 3, Tenino 1

Elma outplayed Tenino in the second half to earn a 3-1 victory over Tenino on Thursday at Beavers Stadium in Tenino.

The Eagles (6-5-2, 5-1 1A Evergreen) trailed late in the first half after Tenino (6-7-1, 2-4) scored when Callie Mickelson converted on a Maria Summers assist in the 33rd minute.

Just before the end of the first half, Eagles senior Valerie Echeverria sent a free kick near the corner toward senior Mia Monroe, who headed the ball into the net to tie the game 1-1 heading into halftime.

After the break, Elma took control.

Echeverria centered a ball to senior midfielder Miley Seaberg, who quickly found Monroe, who took a hard, low shot from inside the 18-yard box for her second goal of the game, putting Elma up 2-1 in the 55th minute.

Eagles senior defender Amaya Lewis gave Elma a cushion when she took a 30-yard free kick and placed it into the corner of the net for a 3-1 lead in the 66th minute.

The Eagles were without leading scorer Beta Valentine for the second straight game as the injured senior forward was not cleared to play, but was on the sideline.

“She didn’t get to play, which is unfortunate. It’s been hard for her to sit on the sideline and watch but the team played well we had a great second half,” Elma head coach Evan Valentine said. “We moved the ball well and rearranged a little bit of our tactics and came out with a win. It was a good game. Proud of the team for how hard they worked and proud of us for keeping to our our game plan and, in the end, it came out in our favor.”

Elma sits one game behind Montesano in the race for first place in the 1A Evergreen League.

GIRLS PREP SOCCER

Centralia 3, Aberdeen 1

Three second-half goals spelled doom for Aberdeen in a 3-1 loss to Centralia on Thursday at Tiger Stadium in Centralia.

Aberdeen (5-7-1, 2-5 1A Evergreen) and Centralia (6-4-3, 5-2) were locked in a scoreless tie at halftime with the Bobcats nearly taking the lead when senior midfielder Scotlyn Lecomte hit a 30-yard free kick just inches over the crossbar early into the second half.

The Tigers would take a lead on a goal by Olivia Gruginski in the 47th minute, but the Cats would tie the game 30 seconds later when freshman defender Hana Lessard drove a free kick 60 yards to Lecomte, who won the ball and put a away a shot from 16-yards out.

After both teams had chances to break the tie, Gruginski scored in the 54th minute off an assist from Jaslin Corona after the Bobcats failed to clear a long free kick out of their own zone.

Aberdeen then spent the majority of the game in front of the Tigers’ net, but could not find the tying goal.

Cats keeper Anni Devine kept the deficit at one goal with a key 1-on-1 save as time was winding down in the second half.

But Centralia once again exhibited the finishing touch that escaped Aberdeen when Corona scored off an assist from Gruginski in the 72nd minute.

“The girls once again showed improvement in most areas compared to the first match,” Aberdeen head coach Larry Fleming said. “If we can come through with the right pass, shot or clear a little more often, then we will win this type of close game.”

Fleming commended the play of Lecomte and fellow seniors Delaney Shoemaker and Abby Mainio for their “toughness winning the ball” on Thursday.

Aberdeen’s JV team lost 4-0 Thursday afternoon. Sawyer Shoemaker, Celia Madril and Daisy Vessey were cited by Bobcats assistant coach Lindsey Scott for their “good hustle.”

Aberdeen play at W.F. West at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
