Tenino 36, Hoquiam 7
Hoquiam is on the outside looking in at a playoff spot after a 36-7 loss to Tenino on Friday at Olympic Stadium in Hoquiam.
The Grizzlies (2-5 overall, 0-2 1A Evergreen) struggled to keep the Beavers (4-3, 1-2) out of the end zone, trailing 22-0 at halftime and 29-0 entering the final quarter of play.
Hoquiam junior quarterback Joey Bozich went 10 for 29 with two interceptions and 143 yards passing for the Grizzlies, with his favorite target being running back Kingston Case, who caught four passes for 80 yards.
Rushing the football was a problem for Hoquiam on Friday as its top two runners – Case and fellow running back Winston Kaikaka – combined for 20 yards on 16 carries.
With the loss, the Grizzlies missed a chance to leapfrog Tenino in the league standings and remain in fifth place.
Hoquiam hosts Elma in a key league matchup at 7 p.m. on Friday.

Black Hills 23, Elma 14
Some big-play mistakes both hurt and helped Elma in a 23-14 non-league loss to Black Hills on Friday in Tumwater.
The Eagles (3-4) and Wolves (3-4) were scoreless in the second quarter until Black Hills quarterback Jaxsen Beck hit receiver Tristan Deville for an 84-yard touchdown pass early in the second quarter.
It wouldn’t be the last impactful big play of the game.
Later in the quarter, Elma set up for a punt that turned out to be disastrous. A bad snap bounced in front of punter Blaize Salazar, who couldn’t come up with the bad ball cleanly as the ball trickled a few yards in front of him. Salazar tried to recover the loose ball but it was too late as Black Hills’ Marshall Orona scooped up the fumble and ran 38 yards for a touchdown, putting the Wolves up 13-0.
Elma’s troubles deepened when a snap on a Salazar punt from the back of the end zone nearly sailed over his head and out of bounds. Salazar leaped to recover the ball, but was under immense pressure as his punt failed to clear the end zone.
Elma recovered the ball in their own end zone, resulting in a safety and a 15-0 deficit early in the third quarter.
Later in the period, Elma got back in the game with a big play of its own. With Black Hills setting up for a short field goal attempt, Eagles senior Traden Carter broke through the line and blocked the kick. Carter then grabbed the ball and outraced the field for a 92-yard touchdown.
The two-point conversion put Elma down 15-8 with 6:31 to play in the third quarter.
Elma had a chance to further cut into the Black Hills lead when Matthew Wood lined up for a 24-yard field goal attempt, but a high snap led to the kick being blocked and recovered by the Wolves with 8:51 to play in the game.
Black Hills’ Jake Tinsley then scored on an 11-yard run for a 22-8 lead with just over five minutes left in the fourth quarter.
Elma would make the score more respectable when quarterback Isaac McGaffey rolled to his left, escaped a tackle and threw a pass into the end zone. With a defender right next to him, Carter came down with the catch after the ball was tipped for a 23-yard touchdown with 21 seconds to play.
“Tough game. The weather and wind was crazy up there, made it tough to operate,” Elma head coach Larry Raynes said. “There was a lot of shooting ourselves in the foot. … We had opportunities, we just missed them.”
McGaffey went 16 for 34 for 152 yards and two interceptions.
Sophomore receiver Colt Landstrom caught eight passes for 66 yards for Elma, which was outgained 322-133 and rushed for minus-19 yards in the game.
“The kids fought hard the whole game and kept fighting to the end,” Raynes said. “You’ve got to put a complete game together and sometimes you’re just a couple of plays away, but the ball doesn’t bounce your way and that opportunity gets missed and that happened tonight.”
The loss doesn’t hurt Elma’s place in the league standings as the Eagles sit in third place with a 1-1 league record.
Elma can get one step closer to securing the league’s third playoff spot with a win over Hoquiam at 7 p.m. on Friday in Hoquiam.

Raymond-South Bend 42, East Jefferson 12
It was an eventful night for Raymond-South Bend as the Ravens snapped a five-game losing streak with a 42-12 victory over East Jefferson on Friday at the newly-christened Sanchez Field at South Bend High School.
RSB (2-5) took a 13-0 lead with two first-quarter touchdown runs by running back Isaac Schlueter.
Leading 13-6 in the second quarter, senior quarterback Chris Quintana scored two straight touchdown of his own as RSB took a 28-6 lead into the break.
In the third quarter, Quintana scored on a 30-yard run followed a few minutes later when a blocked punt was caught by lineman Nolan Miller, who scored a touchdown as the Ravens put the game away 42-6.
A fourth-quarter touchdown by the 1A class Rivals (0-7) closed out the scoring.
Quintana finished with 138 yards on 15 carries while Schlueter also eclipsed the century mark with 13 carries for 117 yards.
RSB also took better care of the ball, with two fumbles lost compared to seven turnovers in last week’s loss to Napavine.
“It was probably our best defense performance of the year so far. I was very happy to see those kids turn a corner,” RSB head coach Luke Abbott said. “We finished some drives, Schlueter and Quintana had some good games and played really well, and we got out semi-healthy.”
During the evening, the football field at South Bend High School was renamed to Sanchez Field in honor of longtime former South Bend athletic director and current RSB assistant coach Tom Sanchez.
“That was nice to see Tom get that and the kids all wanted to win in the inaugural game at Sanchez Field,” Abbott said.
“We started calling it ‘The Chez’ to tease Tom a little,” RSB assistant head coach and Raymond athletic director Mike Tully said. “We even got the concession stand to make a special ‘Chez’ burger for him tonight.”
The game also represented a victory on South Bend High School’s homecoming.
RSB will be back in league action when it takes on Forks at 7 p.m. Friday in Forks.
The Ravens will close out the regular season on Oct. 31 against Ilwaco at ‘The Chez.’

Tumwater 55, Aberdeen 0
Aberdeen’s young squad got a first-hand look at what it means to be a No. 1 teams in a 55-0 loss to top-ranked Tumwater on Friday in Aberdeen.
“Our goal was to survive and we did that,” Aberdeen head coach Todd Bridge said. “Our goal was to slow the tempo of the game down, and they were scoring pretty much at will. Offensively, we were able to slow the game down.”
Tumwater (7-0, 2-0 2A Evergreen) scored on three touchdowns in the first quarter, all on runs longer than 55 yards, and held a commanding 35-0 lead at halftime against the Bobcats (2-5, 1-2).
“We were able to move the ball on our opening drive, then they made some adjustments and we couldn’t take advantage of the adjustments,” Bridge said. “They changed their defensive front and overloaded our right-hand side and we weren’t able to do anything about it.”
After having a banner offensive day in a victory over winless Centralia the previous week, Aberdeen struggled to get anything going against the T-Birds as the Cats managed just 93 yards of total offense, 93 of those on the ground, while Tumwater had 410 total yards, 350 on the ground.
Standout junior running back Micah Schroeder led Aberdeen with 64 yards on 24 carries.
“This is a blessing, it’s a weird one, but it’s a blessing,” Bridge said. “We get to see, live once a year, what No. 1 looks like. If you want to be playing football around Thanksgiving or later, then that’s what you’ve got to look like.”
According to Bridge, Aberdeen matches up with Tumwater as far as physical stature is concerned, but the difference for the T-Birds is the level of execution.
“When you look at their players, they don’t look any different than we do. … We look quite comparable,” he said. “The new term is they are very clean. They don’t make mistakes. About the third time I was gathering the kickoff return team together and I asked them, ‘What do you guys see out there?’ and they said, ‘They don’t make mistakes.’ … It’s like a cavalry charge. You can’t get to the ball-carrier because you’ve got to get through all their other horses.”
Aberdeen was even with Tumwater in the turnover department with one apiece while the Bobcats limited their penalties to five for 30 yards.
With the loss, Aberdeen sits a half-game behind Black Hills for third place in the 2A Evergreen Conference.
The Bobcats will face the Wolves at 7 p.m. on Friday at Tumwater Stadium.
