Grubb, Allen pace top five at league championships

Montesano’s Colton Grubb and Elma’s Robby Allen placed in the top 10 at the conclusion of the two-day 1A District 4 Championships on Wednesday at the Tumwater Valley Golf Course.

Grubb placed third overall, shooting a consistent 77 over 18 holes in the first round followed by a 78 in the final round for an overall score of 155.

Allen took fifth with a score of 158 (75-83), likely guaranteeing himself a spot in the state championships in the spring.

Elma’s Brody Palmer placed 10th with a score of 170 (84-86) while Monte’s Ayhdn Sauer (88-85, 173) and Caden Grubb (86-88, 174) placed 13th and 15th, respectively.

Seton Catholic’s Jacob Parker won the individual title with a final score of 139 (71-68) to finish 4-under par for the tournament.

Seton Catholic won the team title, with Montesano and Elma placing second and third, respectively.

It is unknown at the time of this writing how may of the District 4 golfers will compete at the state-championship tournament in May as allocations won’t be released until later this school year.

It’s a safe bet that finishing inside the top five, both Colton Grubb and Allen will be invited to the state championship.

“A really great two days of golf for our boys in the Harbor. Both Elma and Montesano represented incredibly well and competed with the best of them in the tournament,” Montesano head coach Tyler Grajek said. “Great to see both of the programs playing well when it mattered.”

Elma and Montesano represented 11 of the 31 golfers that made the cut for the second day of the tournament.

“Combined we had one-third of the participants in Day 2 of districts, and I couldn’t be any happier about that,” Elma head coach Collin McMaster said. “As co-League champions with Monte, our boys represented quite well, finishing with seven in the top 20, including two in the top 5. This field is much larger than last few years as we’ve added a few schools to the district, so that raises the competition level quite a bit.”

State-championship participants are expected to be announced in the spring.
