GIRLS PREP BASKETBALL
Black Hills 70, Hoquiam 59
A win slipped through Hoquiam’s proverbial grip with a 70-59 overtime loss to Black Hills on Tuesday in Tumwater.
The Grizzlies (3-2 overall) led by as much as nine points in the second quarter and rallied to take a 3-point lead with 30 seconds to play in the game.
Wolves sharpshooter Tyler Venable buried a three to tie the game at 57-57 and a Grizzlies attempt at the buzzer failed, sending the game into overtime.
The extra period belonged to Black Hills (5-0), specifically Venable. The Wolves guard hit a pair of threes and scored eight of her team’s 13 points in the extra period as Hoquiam went cold, scoring a lone field goal by junior post Sydney Gordon in overtime.
Hoquiam had four players score in double figures led by guard Lexi LaBounty with 16 points.
Gordon (14 points, 8 rebounds), guard Katlyn Brodhead (13 pts., 5 assists) and forward Aaliyah Kennedy (10 pts., 18 reb.) also scored in double figures for the Grizzlies.
Hoquiam went 23 of 63 from the field (36.5%) and outrebounded Black Hills 38-36. But 30 turnovers proved costly for the Grizzlies, according to head coach Chad Allan.
