Montesano 62, Rochester 21

Montesano took care of business in handling Rochester 62-21 on Thursday at Montesano High School.

The Bulldogs (9-4 overall, 3-0 1A Evergreen) seized control of the game a few minutes into the first quarter and left little doubt as to the outcome by the end of the frame, leading 20-4 over the Warriors (1-12, 0-2).

Monte got double-digit scoring performances from two different players on Thursday.

Standout junior forward Jillie Dalan dominated Rochester with a game-high 24 points to go along with four steals.

Sophomore Makena Blancas continues to emerge as a viable scoring threat for the Bulldogs, dropping 12 points with five rebounds and five steals in the win.

Sophomore point guard Tieander Olson added eight points, a team-high 13 rebounds and dished out six assists as Monte’s floor general.

Eight Monte players scored in the game as the Bulldogs shot 36% from the field on 25-of-69 shooting and converted 12-of-18 free throws in the game (66%).

“We were a little shaky in the first minute,” Monte head coach Mark Mansfield said. “But we got a couple of steals and buckets and kind of took control. We did what we needed to do tonight. We shared the ball and moved it around.”

Mansfield praised his team’s defense, which won the battle of the boards with a 29-21 rebounding advantage and tallied 21 steals as a team.

“Our defense was really good,” he said. “We moved our feet much better tonight on defense. It was nice to see that we were kind of flying around the entire night. It was a good outing.”

Montesano hosts Napavine at 6:45 p.m. on Tuesday.

Shelton 62, Aberdeen 40

Aberdeen’s shooting touch escaped the Bobcats in a 62-40 loss to Shelton on Thursday at Aberdeen High School.

The Bobcats (3-6, 1-1 2A Evergreen) trailed by 11 after one quarter of play to the Highclimbers (9-3, 2-0) and after being down 31-18 at the half, saw the game get away from them in losing a 22-8 third quarter.

For Bobcats head coach Curtis Eccles, the difference in the game came down to one thing for his team.

“We just didn’t shoot well,” he said.

The numbers back it up.

Aberdeen shot 22% from the floor on 14-of-64 shooting and converted just 6-of-21 free throws (29%).

Sophomore guard Bentley Brown had 13 points to lead Aberdeen.

The Bobcats improved in the turnover department over the course of the game. Aberdeen had 14 turnovers in the first half to just three over the final 16 minutes of play.

Aberdeen faces Hoquiam in a Myrtle Street Rivalry matchup at 7 p.m. on Monday at Hoquiam High School.

Hoquiam 66, Tenino 24

Hoquiam got back into the win column with a 66-24 league victory over Tenino on Thursday at Tenino High School.

Hoquiam (7-6, 1-1 1A Evergreen) won the game with a defensive performance that forced 26 turnovers by the Beavers (3-11, 0-3), leading to a 24-of-63 shooting night (38%).

“We were able to get more pressure defense going tonight,” Hoquiam head coach Chad Allan said. “Great effort and bounce back from our last loss. We are still building the plane as we fly it and it was good to get a few minutes of smooth progress. Great team win.”

Grizzlies junior guard Lexi LaBounty led Hoquiam with 19 points on 6-of-8 shooting (75%) and had six steals while freshman post Aaliyah Kennedy recorded a double-double with 16 points and 13 rebounds.

“Everyone played a role in tonight’s improvement, but it was these two who stepped up when we needed them most,” Allan said.

Hoquiam outrebounded Tenino 38-28 and had 12 turnovers to 26 for the Beavers.

Tenino shot 24% on 8-of-34 shooting.

Hoquiam hosts Aberdeen in a Myrtle Street Rivalry game at 7 p.m. on Monday.

BOYS PREP BASKETBALL

Raymond-South Bend 55, North Beach 26

Raymond-South Bend picked up its first league win of the season with a 55-26 victory over North Beach on Thursday at South Bend High School.

The Ravens (3-7, 1-1 2B Pacific) trailed by two after on quarter of play against the Hyaks (3-9, 1-2), but outscored North Beach 28-12 over the second and third periods combined to take command of the game.

Standout senior guard Chris Quintana once again showed why he’s one of the top scorers in the region, tallying a game-high 17 points to go along with four steals in the victory.

Aaron Somero had a team-high 11 rebounds for RSB.

The Hyaks were led by sophomore guard Dakota Russell’s six points.

RSB hosts Onalaska at 7:15 p.m. on Saturday.

North Beach takes on Forks at 7 p.m. on Tuesday.
