Tenino 57, Hoquiam 41
Shots weren’t falling frequently enough for the Hoquiam Grizzlies in a 57-41 loss to Tenino on Friday at Tenino High School.
The Grizzlies (4-8 overall, 0-2 1A Evergreen) scored no more than 12 points in any quarter of the game and went 14 for 45 from the field (31%).
“Shooting was tough tonight,” Hoquiam head coach Jeff Niemi said. “Tenino is getting a lot better. … We struggled with their physicality. They manhandled us without fouling.”
The Grizzlies trailed 34-23 at halftime and had a chance to get back into the game in the third quarter thanks to a defense that held the Beavers (4-11, 2-0) t0 nine points in the frame.
But Hoquiam scored just 16 points in the second half – eight in each of the third and fourth quarters – to suffer its sixth loss in the past seven games.
Sophomore guard Lincoln Niemi scored a game-high 21 points on 6-of-18 shooting (33%) to go along with six assists for the Grizzlies.
Hoquiam had an improved rebounding effort according to Coach Niemi, being outrebounded 37-29, including 13-8 on the offensive glass.
“Pretty proud of the rebounding effort,” Coach Niemi said. “It was the best rebounding we’ve had in weeks. … It was very encouraging.”
Joey Bozich, Tage Dayton and Ryker Maxfield scored six points apiece for Hoquiam.
The Grizzlies committed 22 turnovers to 13 for the Beavers.
Tenino had three players finish in double figures and shot 44% from the field on 24-of-45 shooting, including 22 of 39 from inside the 3-point line (56%).
Hoquiam faces Elma in a 1A Evergreen League game at 7 p.m. on Wednesday at Hoquiam High School.

Aberdeen 49, Shelton 47
Aberdeen rallied from down nine points at the start of the fourth quarter to squeak past Shelton 49-47 on Friday at Aberdeen High School.
The Bobcats (3-5, 2-0 2A Evergreen) led 18-13 after one period of play but saw the lead slip away as the Highclimbers (2-11, 0-2) won the second frame 16-3.
Trailing 39-30 after three quarters, Aberdeen rallied to score 19 points in the final period to earn the two-point victory.
The Bobcats were led by the hot hand of junior shooting guard Jhacob Quezada, who scored a team-high 23 points on 9-of-19 shooting (47%) – including five 3-pointers – to go along with two rebounds and two steals.
Isaac Garcia had eight points while Tarren Lewis scored seven points for a Bobcats team that shot 18 of 51 from the field (35%) and 6 of 7 from the free-throw line (86%).
The Bobcats had 21 rebounds, 11 steals and 11 turnovers as a team and are tied with Tumwater and W.F. West atop the 2A Evergreen Conference with perfect 2-0 records.
Aberdeen faces W.F. West at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in Chehalis.

Montesano 54, Rochester 35
Montesano stayed red hot with a 54-35 victory over Rochester on Friday at Rochester High School.
The Bulldogs (8-6, 3-0 1A Evergreen) won extended their winning streak to six games by holding the Warriors (0-12, 0-2) to 12 points in the first half and 21 through three quarters.
Monte put the game away with a 21-9 third quarter, led by sophomore guard Drew Bruland, who scored all six of his points in the frame.
Montesano’s junior tandem of forward Mason Fry and guard Terek Gunter continue to be a formidable 1-2 punch for the Bulldogs. Fry led Monte with 14 points with Gunter close behind at 13.
Bulldogs sophomore forward Caden Grubb had eight points and a team-best 10 rebounds for a Monte squad that had 38 boards as a team.
Montesano shot 18 of 39 from the field (46%), including 50% from inside the 3-point line (50%).
The Bulldogs also hit 12-of-21 free throws in the game (57%) and committed 27 turnovers in the game.
The Bulldogs host R.A. Long at 6:45 p.m. on Friday.

Ocosta 51, Naselle 43
Ocosta led big early and made the key plays late to beat Naselle 51-43 in a key 1B Coastal League game on Friday in Westport.
The Wildcats (7-3, 2-0 1B Coastal) held the Comets (8-3, 2-2) to three points in jumping out to a 15-point first-quarter lead and held a comfortable 29-12 lead at halftime, thanks in large part to 13 points by senior guard Kayden Turner.
But Naselle went on a run for approximately 5:30 of the second half to trim the lead to six points until senior guard Jesus Agramon scored on an inbound play to snap the Comets’ streak and put Ocosta back up by eight points.
Naselle would never get closer than five points the rest of the way as Ocosta senior guard Dalton Welch buried four free throws down the stretch to secure the victory.
“Well, we played about as good defensively as we could have in the first half. … We did a great job of contesting everything and limiting them to one shot,” Ocosta head coach Jason Quinby said. “I’m the fourth, Naselle buckled down and showed their big game experience while we struggled to execute as we had done most of the game. … It was a big league win for us and I’m happy to win, but can’t wait to practice what we struggled with in the fourth quarter and be better prepared for the next tough battle.”
Turner (19 points, 6 rebounds, 4 steals, 3 assists) and Welch (10 pts., 9 reb., 4 ast.) scored in double digits for Ocosta, which had 34 rebounds, 12 assists and 14 turnovers as a team.

Willapa Valley 77, Lake Quinault 14
Willapa Valley cruised to a 77-14 league victory over Lake Quinault on Friday in Amanda Park.
Valley (9-2, 3-0 1B Coastal) had three players score in double figures and 11 total Vikings scored in the rout.
Willapa Valley led 37-8 after the first quarter and allowed six points over the final three quarters to pick up the win.
Senior point guard Nathan Fluke (12 points), sophomore guard Blane King (11 pts.) and junior guard Hank Swartz (10 pts., 8 rebounds) each scored in double figures for the Vikings.
Senior guard Aiden Sliva and sophomore Max Jarvis had eight and seven rebounds for Willapa Valley, respectively.
“Our starters played well in the first quarter and got us off to a great start,” Valley head coach Derek Rask said. “We had solid contributions from our whole roster this evening.”
With the win, Valley sits a half-game up on Ocosta for first place in the 1B Coastal League.
The Vikings will square off against the Wildcats at 7 p.m. on Tuesday at Ocosta High School.

Ocosta 64, Morton-White Pass 59
Ocosta’s balanced scoring was enough to overcome a stellar performance in a 64-59 win over Morton-White Pass on Saturday in Westport.
Four Wildcats scored in double figures as Ocosta overcame a 43-point performance by Timberwolves senior guard Judah Kelly, who went 18 of 44 (41%) from the floor to score 72% of hits team’s points in the game.
“We knew that Judah was going to get his, our game plan was to use our size and physicality to hunt mismatches, which we did quite well,” Ocosta head coach Jason Quinby said. “As we did the night before, we played really good defense and built a double-digit lead going into the fourth, and as the night before, our opponent started to hit from the outside and forced us to really lock in on offense and make our possessions count. I thought we regrouped well and went back to our bread and butter, which was finishing inside.”
Ocosta senior guard Kayden Turner (21 points, 4 rebounds, assist, steal), freshman post Sonny Beard (12 pts., 13 reb.), freshman guard Luis Solis (10 pts., 4 reb., 2 ast.) and senior guard Dalton Welch (10 pts., 8 reb., 3 ast.) each scored in double digits for the Wildcats.

Onalaska 79, Raymond-South Bend 67
Raymond-South Bend lost for the sixth time in the past seven games with a 79-67 non-league defeat to Onalaska on Saturday at Raymond High School.
The Ravens (3-8) struggled to slow down the Loggers, which had four players score in double figures.
RSB trailed 36-29 at the half and despite scoring 38 points in the second half, was outscored by two over the final 16 minutes of play to suffer the defeat.
“We played a tough game, but we just couldn’t slow their shooting down,” RSB head coach Jon Schray said.
Junior forward Chris Banker led RSB with 17 points, with teammates Chris Quintana (12 points) and Carson Ridderbush (11 pts.) also scoring in double figures for the Ravens.
Sophomore forward Tanner Morris led RSB with nine rebounds.
The Ravens host Chief Leschi in a 2B Pacific League game at 7 p.m. on Tuesday in Puyallup.
